Walmart testing iBeacons, Motorola Solutions creates iBeacon marketing platform

If you thought that the Minority Report depiction of how things should be sold to you was annoying, times are gearing towards it. We’ve seen how Apple is testing iBeacons in Baseball and Basketball stadiums, and even though its purpose to give you an enhanced experience of the game is quite cool, we all know there will be ads all over the place as well. Sadly, or luckily depending on how you view this, the vision doesn’t stop ...

Tzukuri sunglasses will use iBeacons to help you track them if lost

So far, the need for Apple’s new iBeacon technology has been debatable. Surely it’s cool for your phone to give you an enhanced experience of any Baseball game when you take a seat, but that can get annoying when unwanted ads kick-in. We’ve seen Apple expand the technology to retail stores and other services, but probably the most genius use for the technology, is in helping you track something that’s valuable. A company called Tzukuri is planning to launch a crowd funding project to build sunglasses that include iBeacon technology to help you track them. These ...

Apple’s iBeacon to reach your home and NBA arenas soon

Apple’s launch of iBeacon has come with a little skepticism from the market. We’ve seen the company launch the service at certain MLB Stadiums across the United States, with some dubbing it as a cool feature, and others annoyed at the fact that they just want to go watch the game. Still, the project is still a work in progress, and it’s soon about to expand into new usage scenarios. On one hand we’ve just learned that Apple is ready to deploy the service in NBA arenas. The Golden State Warriors became the first NBA team to adopt this recently as a trial, and we ...

iOS 7.1 transforms iBeacon into something a bit more useful

With the release of iOS 7 last year, Apple introduced smartphone users to the iBeacon, a Bluetooth-based system that lets these beacons alert nearby phones of their presence, ultimately triggering some kind of action in software – the whole thing was painted as a slightly more long-distance version of NFC tags. For instance, Major League Baseball has been installing iBeacons in stadiums to work in concert with its “At the Ballpark” app. Over ...

For the last couple of weeks we’ve been hearing rumors of Major League Baseball installing iBeacons on as many as 20 Baseball parks in the US. This initiative will allow iPhone users to receive location-specific alerts within ballparks via the existing “At The Ballpark“ app. We still don’t have any specifics as to what type of alerts you’ll get during the game, but it seems we’ll know very soon. Apple Stores get iBeacon makeover

Of all the new features present in Apple’s release of iOS 7, iBeacon is probably one of the less well-understood. That should start changing as more and more users are exposed to places where iBeacons are deployed, but for the moment they just haven’t had that many opportunities to see the system in action. That situation could be getting better right now, as Apple makes a big push to get iBeacons active in its retail stores. Starting today, all of Apple’s stores in the US will begin using iBeacon technology, including both ...

What is iBeacon and why you should care

Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice-president of software engineering, took a jab at Android and NFC at WWDC this year when he said “There’s no need to wander around the room, bumping your phone.” He said this in reference to AirDrop and iBeacon, which was introduced with Apple’s iOS 7. But, before we get into iBeacon, let’s talk about NFC — Near Field Communication. Many smartphones powered by Android, Windows Phone 8, and even BlackBerry come with NFC inside. NFC is awesome! With NFC I can change profiles on my phone for home, work, or car mode. ...
