LeEco has no choice but to downsize its ambitious operations in ‘various geographies’, including India

Before judging Xiaomi too harshly for continuing to show hesitation regarding a proper US expansion, or Huawei for still struggling to gain traction in the uber-crowded and hyper-competitive smartphone market, consider LeEco for a second.

This Chinese tech and entertainment giant rushed its rise to global fame, spending way too much money too early on ramping up production, distribution and marketing efforts across “various geographies”, most notably stateside and in India.

Consequently, the company now faces big cash flow and stock trading problems, needing to lay off an unspecified number of employees around the world as part of a major business strategy revision. This comes at a time of “overall volatility and uncertainty forecast for the global economy”, with “business imperatives” entirely prompting certain “steps to ensure the sustainability and profitability” of LeEco’s operations.

In a nutshell, expenses have to be reduced ASAP for affordable, largely promising but far from flawless LeEco phones and TVs to stay with important American and Indian retailers, as well as continue selling through the OEM’s regional online LeMall branches.

In addition to honorable discharges of employees that will be offered outplacement services and severance packages, LeEco may also need to scale down device manufacturing and advertising. But fret not, as a “robust product pipeline” is still “in the offing.”

LeEco and Coolpad take their alliance to the next level with 6GB RAM Cool S1 phone

Digging LeEco’s affordable phones despite the gigantic Chinese company’s sudden financial woes, but perhaps would like something even cheaper and/or more powerful? Meet the $360 and up Cool S1, officially unveiled in China today after a regulatory Tenaa visit last month.

As you may have guessed already, this is another joint LeEco – Coolpad release, and although the dual rear camera trend is snubbed this time around, you get a top-of-the-line Snapdragon 821 processor inside, with RAM capping off at an industry-high 6GB.

Of course, you’ll need to pay extra for all that memory, namely 3,200 Yuan ($460), 128GB internal storage also included. The “entry-level” LeEco Cool S1 only provides 4GB RAM and 32GB digital hoarding room, while CNY 2,700 ($389) buys you a 6/64 gigs configuration.

Across the board, you’re looking at respectable albeit single 16 and 8MP rear and front shooters, pre-installed Android 6.0 Marshmallow, premium Harman Clari-Fi audio technology, USB Type-C connectivity, Bluetooth 4.1, 4G LTE, dual SIM and Full HD 5.5-inch screen resolution.

All in all, the LeEco Cool S1 more strongly resembles the non-Coolpad-co-branded Le Pro 3 than the Cool 1 Dual, down to the fully metallic design, wasp 7.5mm waist, and large 4,070mAh battery. But we don’t expect this to hit traditional US retail anytime soon.

Reports of margin call halt LeEco stock trading, company plans immediate business changes

LeEco has announced that it is setting up immediate changes to its business after its share price fell fast into a deepening trough.

It decided to halt the trade of the stock of Leshi, its original online media company, before Shenzhen’s markets opened on Wednesday. Why? Media spread word that a shock 7.8 percent drop the day before caused a margin call — when a broker asks an investor to contribute more equity into the entity or risk that broker pulling its funds out.

The company said that the figures used by reports were incorrect, but did not comment further.

LeEco is working on raising more funds after its chairman, Jia Yueting, announced that the company expanded too quickly and is facing a cash crunch.

Leshi (formerly Letv) is the only profitable unit of LeEco. The company says trading will resume on its stock as soon as their investigation into its price collapse.

Instead of giving up, LeEco ramps up US retail efforts at Amazon, Best Buy and Target

Despite recently acknowledged financial difficulties caused by an overly ambitious global expansion, China’s LeEco isn’t ready to slow down its US retail growth efforts just yet. Quite the contrary, as both “ecophones” and “ecotvs” gear up for December 1 launches across Amazon, Best Buy and Target.

Technically, the high-end LeEco LePro 3 and mid-range Le S3 Android handhelds are listed on the company’s official American LeMall website at recommended $400 and $250 prices respectively. But in reality, if you choose your timing carefully, the Snapdragon 821 and 652 5.5-inchers can be yours for 100 bucks less.

They were even available at $279 and $129 respectively on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, with the Le S3 thrown in as a free gift if you purchased costly enough smart TV sets. Hopefully, LeRewards instant rebates bringing the two phones’ price tags down to $300 and $150 tops will also be up for grabs since day one of third-party US retailer availability.

For a limited time, the LeEco Le S3 and LePro 3 should qualify for a complimentary three-month AT&T DirecTV Now subscription as well, and so will the $649 ($449 with rebate) Super4 X43 Pro 4K TV. Meanwhile, the pricier Super4 X55 and X65 earn you six months of DirecTV Now service on the house, and the ultra-premium, gigantic uMax X85 comes with a full year of on-demand video streaming at no extra charge.

Coolpad C105 looks to be another collaboration with LeEco

LeEco and Coolpad share a common chairman and a common ambition — to stimulate growth. The two came to the fore with the Cool1 Dual in August and may come together again soon with another phone.

A device has come through Chinese regulatory agency under Coolpad’s registry with a codename of “C105,” and definitely has a peculiar LeEco-ish look to it — take a gander at the Le Pro 3 and Le S3’s designs, you even get right down to the chromed squircle fingerprint sensing pad.

Speaking of the Le Pro 3, the specs on this Android Marshmallow device seem to be a near-dead ringer to it: what appears to be a Snapdragon 821 with 4GB or 6GB of RAM and storage options of 32GB, 64GB and 128GB. There’s a 5.5-inch full HD screen, a 4,000mAh battery and cameras with 16 megapixels and 8 megapixels of resolution, front and back, respectively.

We’ll likely find out more on this phone in the near future.

LeEco’s first US Black Friday sale will include $279 Le Pro 3 phone, free Le S3 with select TVs

Okay, so perhaps LeEco won’t take over the tech world anytime soon. There is such a thing as too much ambition, it turns out, and instead of raising the Chinese entertainment giant’s profile in super-competitive foreign markets, blind desire for success has resulted in mounting debt burden.

But that doesn’t change the hard fact of Le Pro 3 and Le S3’s US consumer appeal during frequent flash sale events. At $300, the larger, higher-end phone is quite the bargain, Snapdragon 821, 4GB RAM, 64GB ROM, 16MP rear camera and all.

The same goes for the mid-range LeEco Le S3 whenever it costs $150 instead of $250, what with a 5.5-inch Full HD screen, SD652 CPU, 3GB RAM, 16/8MP shooters, and fingerprint sensor in tow.

Believe it or not, you’ll be able to buy the already super-affordable Android handhelds for even less between November 25 and 28, namely $279 and $129 respectively. Better yet, LeEco’s first ever Black Friday/Cyber Monday-combined American deals include sweet $19.98 and $11.97 bundles with power banks and Bluetooth speakers.

Meanwhile, if you’re interested in one of the OEM’s sizzling hot TVs, keep an eye out for the $300-discounted Super4 X65, free Le S3 “ecophone” included, and a $599 Super4 X55 (down from $899), also offered alongside a complimentary Le S3. Just remember to pre-register for your “LeRewards” at LeMall.com as soon as possible.

Second LeEco flash sale underway for Le Pro 3, Le S3

LeEco is continuing to wean itself into the US market with a pure Chinese online startup tactic — periodic flash sales. Well, it’s a relative “flash” to have it run for 14 hours of a whole week, but if you catch this article today and are interested in some new LeEco smartphone and TV action in the US, visit LeMall at the source link.

If you haven’t already, sign up for the LeRewards program. You’ll then have access to buying the Snapdragon 652-powered Le S3 for $149 or the Snapdragon 821-equipped Le Pro 3 for $299 — both on $100 instant rebate, both with 3 months of EcoPass amenities like cloud services, extended warranties and exclusive future discounts.

The Super4 X series 4K smart TVs are also on $200 rebate (we don’t see the uMax 85 on sale with $1,000 off, though) while accessories like headphones and power banks have had the price chopper clip them.

The flash sale ends at 11:59pm Pacific.

LeEco chairman admits that its expansion was too ambitious

We applauded LeEco’s showmanship in charging straight ahead with its expansion from China and Asia to the US — a market that has stymied many Chinese manufacturers in terms of access and growth.

But it seems that the company formerly known as LeTV has spent too much money in getting to this point in neglect of its shareholders, according to a letter to employees spreading around social media and obtained by Bloomberg.

“We blindly sped ahead, and our cash demand ballooned,” said chairman and co-founder Jia Yueting. “We got over-extended in our global strategy. At the same time, our capital and resources were in fact limited.”

Jia said that he has cut his annual salary to ¥1 or just 15 cents. Cost reduction measures will be implemented and growth targets will be more modest going ahead. Consumers will also see fewer discounts and rebates as well.

Just this year, LeEco established multiple offices in the US, acquired TV manufacturer Vizio and tried to get government funding from the state of Nevada in order to build a smart car development facility and equip it with utilities. While it failed to obtain the money, LeEco did launch a slate of TVs and smartphones. It is still partnered with Faraday Future to debut the LeSee car at CES 2017, though the project was explicitly pointed out in Jia’s letter to be a boondoggle, costing the company over ¥10 billion in early development.

The letter triggered a social media tiff with Xiaomi with that company’s co-founder, Lei Jun, criticizing LeEco for not being transparent its debt and rumoring about how much it owes to its creditors. Both companies’ Weibo accounts have volleyed responses on the issue.

Jia Yueting has been funding all of his LeEco ventures through leveraging shares against the original LeTV (or LeShi) content streaming business he brought up in 2004, the only profitable unit of the conglomerate. In the case of Nevada refusing to dispense the funds LeEco needed for its car plant, treasurer Dan Schwartz may have decided against risking taxpayer money on a company essentially riding the Chinese stock market.

Jia also is chairman of manufacturer Coolpad. Both LeEco and that company have suffered tumbles in share prices.

LeMall flash sale starts at 1pm ET with limited availability of LeEco Pro 3 rebates

If you’re catching this post fresh from the US and have some disposable bucks to spare on a smartphone, good news!

LeEco is about to launch a flash sale of its two smartphones in addition to four 4K television sets and a whole bunch of other accessories. The mid-ranger Le S3, which goes for $249 at full retail price, and the full-charge Le Pro 3, standing at $399, will both be discounted by $100.

All you need is a LeRewards account at the LeMall site before 1pm Eastern today and a quick finger to access the instant rebate — it appears that the rebate will be limited to initial product quantities.

The 5.5-inch Le Pro 3 comes with the latest Snapdragon 821 rocessor while the Le S3 strikes out with a Snapdragon 652. The two devices claim digital lossless audio, Dolby Atmos and a pair of USB-C earphones as key differentiators to make up for the lack of a headphone jack on each of them.

LeEco has a Quad HD, SD821 and 16MP front cam-sporting powerhouse in the works

At the time of this writing, LeEco’s first ever LeRewards Flash Sale event stateside can still net you a $100 Le S3 instant rebate or $100 off the list price of the high-end Le Pro3 for a few more hours.

But if you’re late to the promo, fret not, the same discounts will be available in the weeks to come, lowering the two’s tags to $150 and $300 respectively. Or you could wait and hope that the Chinese entertainment giant brings additional super-affordable Android smartphones to US shores before long, possibly starting with the mysterious LEX850 recently cleared by Tenaa.

While China’s FCC counterpart reveals no product images, it gives us enough dirt on this upcoming 5.7-incher’s specifications to assume we’re looking at an incremental Le Pro3 upgrade. Maybe a LeEco Le Pro 3S or even a full-on Le Pro 4 sequel.

The display is not only ever so slightly larger (by 0.2 inches), but also sharper, with 2,560 x 1,440 or Quad HD resolution, and a Snapdragon 821, not 820, processor runs the hardware show. What’s weird is the massive 4,070 mAh battery inside the Le Pro3 shrinks to 3,900 mAh capacity, yet the LEX850 measures 8mm in thickness, up from 7.5.

Other features apparently include an average-sounding 13MP rear camera, mind-blowing 16MP selfie shooter, 4GB RAM, 64GB internal storage, and at least at the moment, Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow on the software side of things.

LeEco launches Super4 X, uMax85 4K TVs

LeEco is positioning itself as “user first.” Its UP2U philosophy stands for “User Planning 2 User” model, but any feature that you may ask for from LeEco can be up to you. And with that business mission, a Chinese content and services company became a smart TV maker, a smart car maker and even a smartphone maker — funny how that came last. So, what else did we get in addition to the smartphones?
