Apple and Carl Zeiss might be gunning for joint release of AR smartglasses this year

Although virtual reality headsets have (moderately) taken off much faster than their mixed reality smartglasses counterparts, and Google’s commercial stumbles in the latter market may serve as a cautionary tale for fellow tech veterans and big-name rivals, it looks like Microsoft, Qualcomm and even Apple are still keen to give AR hardware a try.

Yes, that seemingly unfounded rumor about a Cupertino-made pair of augmented reality goggles a couple of months back picks up a little more steam today, thanks to the investigative work of blogger, technology evangelist, author, and consultant for the immersive media world Robert Scoble.

Scoble first sniffed there was something going on at Carl Zeiss’ CES 2017 booth last week, when the German company’s employees “smiled nervously” at a Tim Cook joke meant to justify the absence of mixed reality optics prototypes, despite the lens specialist’s occupancy of an exhibition space dedicated to AR.

After doing some digging, the journalist was purportedly able to confirm speculation that Apple and Carl Zeiss AG are working on a “light pair of augmented reality/mixed reality glasses that may be announced this year.”

An obviously unnamed Zeiss employee is cited as the “confirmation’s” source, and while Apple has a reputation for dragging out the R&D process of avant-garde products like this one sounds, all signs start to point to a 2017 release. No concrete evidence however, so let’s keep our expectations pragmatically low.

Microsoft’s minimum Windows 10 PC requirements for low-cost VR headsets are indeed modest

Everybody wants a bigger or smaller piece of the early virtual, augmented and mixed reality action, as well as a fast-growing pie of resulting profits. HTC and Valve have partnered on perhaps the most critically acclaimed high-end VR headset thus far, Sony and Oculus promise to provide tough competition, while Samsung leads in humbler, smartphone-dependent goggles.

Of course, Google is now rising against the Gear VR lineup with a complex Daydream platform, both mobile tech specialists also working behind the scenes on completely standalone VR devices.

And then there’s Microsoft, focused on turning the dev-friendly HoloLens into a consumer-oriented product… sooner or later, as well as opening the Windows Holographic OS to a wide range of lower-cost gadgets from third-party OEMs.

The HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus and Acer-made virtual reality headsets are apparently coming next year for $299 and up, supporting different experiences contingent on each of their price tags, specific capabilities and the skills of connected PCs.

With more official details right around the corner, we’re happy to report unofficial news about compatibility with Windows 10 computers featuring as little as 4GB RAM, a DirectX12-enabled GPU, quad-core CPU and 1GB free storage.

Yes, we’re talking any quad-core CPU, even dual cores with hyperthreading, and at least in theory, graphics cards as modest as NVIDIA’s GeForce 410M, GT 540M, GTX 660 or GT 740. Technically, you’ll need a USB 3.0 port too, but in its absence, you may “experience issues” rather than get booted out of the Windows Holographic ecosystem.

Unfazed by the Google Glass flop, Apple is reportedly considering its own AR smart glasses

With tablets pretty much hanging by a thread nowadays, traditional PCs stagnating after a free fall from mainstream popularity, smartphones heading for their first ever decline, and smartwatches still seeking that compelling use case, Apple is left wondering what the industry’s “next big thing” might be.

Self-driving cars? Autonomous virtual reality headsets? How about AR-based smart glasses? That latter concept is reportedly worth a revisit and second R&D try following Google’s monumental failure of getting it off the ground, sealed just last year.

Google Glass, or Project Glass, was very enthusiastically received by “explorers” back in 2013, but privacy and safety concerns, not to mention battery life shortcomings and, well, a decidedly douchey design ultimately killed the oh-so-full-of-promise wearable initiative.

Since then, many tech veterans and big fishes showed interest in VR hardware and software rather than AR, including El Goog, Samsung, HTC, Sony and Facebook. Not Microsoft though, which remains invested in mixed reality HoloLens gear powered by the Windows Holographic platform, while Apple is likely still in the early stages of any sort of development in this field.

Don’t expect an advanced Apple Glass prototype to be outed before 2018 therefore, and like other projects in Cupertino “exploration” and careful consideration, a pivot, pause or altogether cancellation are always possible.

As for what the product may do if it ever materializes, all we know is it would probably “connect wirelessly to iPhones, show images and other information in the wearer’s field of vision”, as well as “use augmented reality” technology… somehow. That’s certainly vague but also arguably intriguing.
