Apple may not have iOS fragmentation, what they have may be even worse!

It seems like every time a new version of iOS or Android is announced, we hear the same mantra of “Android fragmentation” coming from various media outlets and fan-boys. I’ll be the first to admit, there are several versions of Android running on literally hundreds of models of Android-powered phones and tablets compared to only a very small percentage of iOS users running anything other than the latest version. But iOS suffers from something potentially worse: feature fragmentation. Feature Fragmentation From this year’s WWDC we learned quite a bit about iOS 7. It ...

What does iOS 7 mean for the future of Android?

We got an early peak at iOS 7 earlier today. Love it or hate it, it’s finally a change from the same old boring grid of icons. For some this will be considered too extreme a change. For others it won’t have been significant enough. Oh well, I supposed you can’t please everyone all of the time. Once you look past all the glitz and glamour, what does iOS 7 mean for the future of Android? Multitasking is in! One of the more technological differences between Android and iOS has been the way each platform handles multitasking. Android handles running apps much like your ...

Apple announces iOS 7

Today’s WWDC 2013 keynote kicked off much how we were expecting it to, and after Apple spent a few minutes talking about the state of iOS/OSX union, as it were, it dived right in to the new OSX, which it’s calling Mavericks. While there was some very cool stuff there, we’re just a smidge more interested in the mobile side of things. Luckily for us, after it got done showing-off a slew of its new computers, Apple officially announced iOS 7. Tim Cook ...

All deals signed, though Apple iRadio won’t be launched at WWDC, claims report

Everything appears to be ready for Apple iRadio, at least concerning record labels. After previously inking deals with Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group, Apple just recently made an agreement with Sony Publishing (for 10% of Apple’s ad-revenue), having now all three major record labels signed-up. Despite rumors of a WWDC launch, AllThingsD claims that apple will make no official announcement at the event. “Instead, it’s expected to tell developers about the forthcoming service”. It is described as offering more of a Pandora-like experience rather than being ...

WWDC 2013 “7″ banner leaves little to the imagination

While we still have plenty of questions about what we’ll hear announced during next week’s WWDC 2013, the one certainty has been news of iOS 7. As if all the rumors and leaks weren’t enough, we’ve heard confirmation from Apple’s Tim Cook himself that iOS 7 would be on the agenda. Still, they say a picture’s worth a thousand words, and as Apple starts setting things up for the conference, a banner has been revealed that sure seems to confirm ...

Could iOS 7 allow for replacement keyboards?

Apple’s heavy-handed control over iOS can be a bit of a double-edged sword. On one hand, that lets it give users a consistent user experience, but that’s at the price of not giving users greater freedom. As we get ready for news of iOS 7, some of Tim Cook’s comments about openness have developers wondering which aspects of the platform might soon see themselves freed a bit from Apple’s stranglehold. TouchType, the firm behind SwiftKey, is anxious to learn if this might mean iOS support for third-party keyboard software. ...

Case maker betting on new iPad next week

What’s going to happen at WWDC 2013? Sure, iOS 7 is a given, but beyond that there’s a whole lot less certainty. New services sound possible, but actual new hardware is a tougher proposition to push. Sure, rumors have been all over the place, with everything from new iPhones, to a new iPad, iPad mini, or even an iWatch suggested as possibilities, but how much of that stuff might be ready to launch so soon? One case maker sounds pretty convinced that a new iPad ...

Top 5 Predictions for Apple’s WWDC 2013

It’s about that time for Apple to show us the ropes with their next batch of products. WWDC, or World Wide Developers Conference, happens on June 10th and has always been about software enhancements to current software and services. That said, we’ve seen Apple launch a couple of iPhones and even Macs at this event, so there’s no reason why we shouldn’t get excited about this event. The biggest question we have is what’ll we get and what’ll we miss from this event. We do know that iOS 7 will take the spotlight, as Tim Cook confirmed at D11, but could WWDC ...

Is this an early shot of iOS 7?

As far as Apple’s mobile lineup is concerned, the announcement of iOS 7 is likely to be the big news at next week’s WWDC. Rumors have attempted to describe just what we can expect to change, and by far the Jonathan-Ive-led effort to rehash the platform’s look sounds like it will have the greatest impact. We’ve talked about how that could lead to new looks for certain apps, and how it might play up colors to differentiate between them, while at the same ...

Apple’s last-minute push could bring streaming iRadio to WWDC 2013

Is Apple going to debut a new streaming music service at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference? Could the so-called iRadio really be about to launch? The timing sure seems right, with Google just going public with its own All Access system, but rumors from just a couple weeks back made it seem like Apple just couldn’t work out the licensing arrangements it needed with the major publishers, and iRadio might not be ready to go live. With the clock until WWDC 2013 ...
