The US stopped Huawei’s latest $700 million order to TSMC

It seems that Huawei is already being affected by the latest changes in the Huawei ban. The US started to implement more restrictions on Friday, and according to Nikkei Asian Review, the TSMC has turned down Huawei’s latest chipset order because of these new rules.

The US Commerce Department set new rules last Friday, which make manufacturing companies that use US equipment and software to get a special license to sell to Huawei. Some of the sources say that:
“TSMC has stopped taking new orders from Huawei after the new rule change was announced to fully comply with the latest export control regulation.”
“But those already in production and those orders which TSMC took before the new ban are not impacted and could continue to proceed if those chips could be shipped before mid-September.”

Huawei hasn’t made comments on the current situation, while the TSMC says that these are “purely market rumors.” The report says that the rejected $700 million order from Huawei was for its 5nm and 7nm chips, which could be the upcoming Kirin 1020 and the current 5G baseband chips, respectively. It is also rumored that TSMC could be working on full capacity and wouldn’t be able to take any more orders. Whatever the case, Huawei could’ve also been stockpiling components since the end of 2019 to ensure a steady supply of components.

The Chinese tech giant could also start looking for alternatives to the TSMC, such as Qualcomm and MediaTek. Still, there’s no guarantee that these companies would be able to sell their silicon to Huawei since they also use the TSMC to produce their chips.

Comcast unveils new data plans with free 5G access for Xfinity Mobile customers

Comcast-owned Xfinity Mobile has launched new data plans that offer free access to its 5G network without any additional charge. The new data plans with free 5G service offer the flexibility of choosing between per gig and unlimited data structure.

All existing Xfinity Mobile customers can either opt for the unlimited plan priced at $45 per month, or go with the per GB plans that will set you back by $15 for 1 GB, $30 for 3 GB, and $60 for 10GB data per line. It must be noted that Xfinity Mobile currently offers only two 5G-ready phones (Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra), but has promised to add more devices soon.

Xfinity Mobile’s 5G service is currently available across 34 major US cities that include 5G service Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Memphis, Miami, and Washington. And since Xfinity Mobile’s cellular services use Verizon’s network, customers will get access to the faster mmWave 5G band.

MediaTek is updating its Dimensity chip portfolio — the powerful Dimensity 1000 was announced in November of 2019 — with the addition of the new Dimensity 820 SoC, which is, according to the company, “optimized for premium user experiences”, and aims to make 5G more accessible.

It’s an octa-core processor of which there are four high-performance Arm Cortex-A76 cores clocking at 2.6GHz, paired with the five-core Arm Mali G57 GPU with HyperEngine 2.0, supporting high refresh rates of up to 120Hz.

Our Dimensity 1000 is already powering impressive flagship 5G devices in a number of markets. With the new Dimensity 820, we’re now making 5G much more accessible.

The chip incorporates a 5G NR (sub-6GHz) modem for blazing fast connectivity with 5G Carrier Aggregation (CA) technology.

Also part of the Dimensity 820 SoC are a dedicated APU 3.0 as its Artificial Intelligence unit, which can provide more powerful features to the AI Camera, the aforementioned HyperEngine 2.0 gaming technologies to deliver superior gaming experiences, and the MediaTek Imagiq 5.0 image signal processor which adds support for quad-camera setups.

The Dimensity 820 stands out beyond competitors by offering four high-performance Arm Cortex-A76 cores at 2.6GHz within its octa-core CPU, delivering superb performance and responsiveness, among its incredible AI, gaming and photography experiences.

The Dimensity 820 is designed for global sub-6GHz 5G networks in Asia, North America and Europe. As for when exactly will we see the Dimensity 820 chip inside smartphones commercially available is yet unknown, but the second half of the year would be our best guess.

HONOR V6 tablet with 5G and Wi-Fi 6 support arrives on May 18

HONOR is prepping up to launch the X10 series of smartphones, a new laptop, and a Wi-Fi router among a host of other products on May 18. Now, the company has announced that a new Android tablet called the HONOR V6 is also in the pipeline and will break cover next week.

The HONOR V6 is special because it is the company’s first tablet to offer 5G support, and that too for both SA and NSA architecture. Additionally, the company has also announced that the device will bring Wi-Fi 6 support to the table, which essentially means faster internet connectivity if your service provider and router are up to the task.

Moreover, the teaser poster gives us a glimpse of the upcoming tablet, which appears to have taken some design cues from the HUAWEI MatePad that was launched last month. Not much is known about the HONOR V6’s internal hardware, but we expect to learn more from official teasers in the days leading up to its launch.

MediaTek unveils Dimensity 1000+ chip with 144Hz display and dual 5G SIM support

MediaTek has lifted the covers from its latest flagship chipset, the Dimensity 1000+. A slight upgrade over the existing Dimensity 1000 SoC, MediaTek’s new offering adds support for 144Hz display on smartphones, and will first debut on a device from Vivo’s iQoo sub-brand.

A higher refresh rate panel is better suited for playing games at high frame rates, reducing motion blur and jitters to provide a smooth visual experience. The Dimensity 1000+ chip also employs the proprietary HyperEngine 2.0 tech that claims to boost performance and power efficiency.

Another major trick up the sleeve of MediaTek’s latest SoC is support for 5G on two SIM cards simultaneously, complete with dual-mode (NSA+SA) architecture compatibility. Lastly, the Dimensity 1000+ chip also brings the in-house MiraVision tech to the table, which can upscale SDR videos to HDR.

This technology is also claimed to provide better picture quality than HDR10+ by dynamically adjusting attributes such as per frame contrast, sharpness, and color levels during 4K video playback or stream.

OnePlus 8’s Verizon variant won’t fit a regular OnePlus 8 case, and 5G is to blame here

The Verizon variant of OnePlus 8 is the only one that offers mmWave 5G support and also has a different internal name – OnePlus 8 5G UW. (Yuck). But that added dash of 5G speed also ensures that a regular OnePlus 8 case won’t on a Verizon variant of the phone due to a slightly different positioning of the volume rocker.

The anomaly was first reported by a OnePlus 8 user on Reddit who purchased the device from Verizon and later discovered that a case purchased from a different outlet won’t fit on the phone. The volume rocker on the OnePlus 8’s Verizon variant is placed slightly lower compared to a regular OnePlus 8 purchased from another carrier or store.

An analysis of the US FCC documents by PhoneArena reveals that the mmWave supporting OnePlus 8 sold by Verizon has an extra modem fitted near the volume button, which is why the button had to be moved slightly lower. So, if you purchased your OnePlus 8 from Verizon, you’ll have to buy the compatible case from Big Red, which users report are either out of stock, expensive, or plain ugly.
