No, it doesn’t look like the Galaxy S8 will work on Google’s Daydream VR platform

It's probably futile to try to pair a Galaxy S8 or S8+ handheld with a Daydream View headset, as Samsung bets big on the Gear VR.

Galaxy S8 headphone jack out, screen to absorb home button

The Galaxy S8 is not copying the iPhone 7. And yet, if you frame the rumors the right way, it can definitely seem like that’s the case.

Just as we’re hearing about Samsung’s spring chicken for 2017 sprouting dual speakers for the first time in the Galaxy S-series history, SamMobile is reporting that the Galaxy S8 will do away with the 3.5mm headphone jack. A USB Type-C port will be the default replacement connection for audio peripherals.

The combination move follows Apple’s own as the iPhone 7 exhibits all three characteristics with the exception of the USB-C port, co-opted for Lightning.

Another development from SamMobile is that the S8 may potentially take the lead against its future rival, the iPhone 8, in that it will supposedly not hold a home button. Instead, Samsung will boost the screen-to-body ratio and embed a fingerprint sensor underneath the display.

Speaking of said display, it is now said that the chaebol will not make the jump to 4K resolution, but will increase the number of subpixels in its quad HD Super AMOLED product. The dot formation changes from Diamond PenTile to the standard RGB pattern, allowing for 50 percent more subpixels onto the plane — what results is not an increase in detail, but better color depth overall. A new diode material will cut down on the display’s power consumption and keep it running for longer.

If true, all of these developments seem to coalesce around the fact that Samsung is going all-in to make Daydream VR a reality on its next Galaxy S phone. Virtual reality, that is.

Sorry, we couldn’t help it.

Google opens pre-orders for snazzier Crimson and Snow Daydream View

While Google arguably made the right call finding inspiration in “the clothes you wear” for the comfortable, breathable Daydream View, it felt a little odd to pair the “Really Blue” or “Quite Black” Pixel and Pixel XL phones with the somewhat bland-looking “Slate” VR headset.

But if fashion was more important for you than getting the immersive fabric-manufactured goggles free of charge with Pixel pre-orders, it’s now time to rejoice. Deeply red and fairly white Daydream View flavors are officially available at the Google Store with estimated shipping by December 8.

Actually dubbed “Crimson” and “Snow”, the new colors add a welcome touch of flashy charm to the original fully gray virtual reality content viewer. The rose-coated variant in particular stands out, and may get its initial inventory depleted before long, what with its snowy white accents and all.

It goes without saying that all three models cost $79 stateside, supporting the Pixel, Pixel XL, Moto Z, Moto Z Force and a slew of upcoming ultra-high-end Android handhelds with identical specs, including motion controllers out the box at no extra charge.

Reddit’s getting Android Nougat for Moto Z Droid and Moto Z Force Droid

More Nougaty action in the Motorola family is coming its users ways. More than just the Moto G4, the Moto Z Droid and Moto Z Force Droid are getting an update to Android 7.0.

Two separate threads in the Moto_Z subreddit have shown off both Verizon-exclusive devices with the system update screen in its glory. Unfortunately, unlocked versions are not into the action just yet. But, at least with the Moto Z Force Droid, we do have access to Daydream VR — good for your View headset.

The spread is apparently on, we just hope that unlocked units get their spread on sooner than later.
