Carrier looking to July availability for Windows Phone 8 GDR2 updates

We’ve been talking about Microsoft’s plans for the next big Windows Phone 8 update, GDR2, for months now. Some of the picture of how the update would arrive has been clear: for instance, we know that Nokia models will start getting their “Amber” updates next month, and that’s going to be tied-in to the release of GDR2. But with how inconsistent Windows Phone update distribution has become, that’s hardly confirmation that other OEMs would ...

Canada Matches T-Mobile’s $150 Lumia 521 Pricing for Lumia 520

It’s no secret that we’re seriously jazzed about T-Mobile’s crazy-affordable pricing for Nokia’s Lumia 521, selling the Windows Phone 8 handset for a scant $150. As we’ve mentioned when discussing this bargain, that’s quite a bit less than what the international 520 has been going for, which we’ve seen more up around the $200 mark. Luckily for all of you not situated in the States, ...

Dear Nokia, Please Reboot Your Phone Designs

Oh no! Just how many variations on the same design can the market take? I guess the fair answer to that is different from person to person and there’s always the good old saying according to which you shouldn’t fix something that is not broken (or, in this case, that still sells). Apple’s iPhones look fairly the same; of course there are differences from one major iteration to the other (3, 4, 5) but the design principle is alike. Before Samsung launched its Galaxy S 4 I was praying for a new design because the current pebble-like aspect has been used and abused like a ...

The Pocketnow Weekly Podcast, Episode 033: The Great MWC Wrap-Up

We think it’s pretty fair to say that MWC 2013 was one part IFA and one part CES: a few stark disappointments peppered among some really amazing stuff. We’ve seen technology this week ranging from the incredible to the absurd – from the third iteration of ASUS’s wild Padfone concept to the improbable debut of a Kyocera Echo lookalike. The big guys have come out to play, too, but they’re a little shy this time around: neither Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8.0 nor Nokia’s midrange Lumias blew the roof off the joint. Even a few has-beens came out to confuse ...

Nokia Lumia 520, 720 Get Retailer Pricing, UK Arrival Date

When Nokia announced its new, more affordable Windows Phone 8 models earlier this week, the Lumia 520 and Lumia 720, it gave us some initial pricing and retail launch info. Now we’re getting new details from retailers, helping us fill in the picture of just how these handsets will go up for sale. Nokia already said that both phones would initially ship sometime in March, but for the 520, at least, specified that it would first go up for sale only in Southeast Asia. Supposedly, the phone would ...

There’s nothing particularly new to see in this set, besides giving us a better glimpse at all the color options that will be ...

Nokia Lumia 520, Lumia 720 Pics Leak

Of all the Nokia Lumia smartphones we’re expecting to see at the Mobile World Congress, the 720 and 520 have been the most well-formed. While we have general rumors about other models like a PureView phone or a 920-ish model for Verizon, the 720 and 520 have received pretty comprehensive spec lists, and already appeared in regulatory filings. Today we get our first look at these two models, thanks to a pair of leaked ...

Four New Nokia Lumia Models Spotted in Server Logs

We’re coming down to the wire on Nokia’s MWC event, with just one week to go until we get to see what’s new from the company. Our chance of seeing a tablet may be shot, but there are plenty of rumors about new smartphones that should keep us satisfied. Chances are, not everything we’ve heard about will make an appearance, but Nokia could still have a good number of new phones to show off. Just how many, though? According to the logs of one ad network serving Windows Phone ...

Specs Get Rumored for Nokia Lumia 720, 520

Yesterday, we got to check out some regulatory paperwork that seemed to reveal the presence of two upcoming Nokia Lumia smartphones, the 720 and 520. At the time, the only info we had heard about the specifics of these models is that they’d be Windows Phone 8 devices, and have hardware similar to the 710 and 510. Well, Windows Phone 8 isn’t going to agree very well with the 510′s meager 256MB of RAM, so clearly some changes would need to take place. Today, we get our first sense of just what those ...
