Sony Xperia Z1 Compact vs Apple iPhone 5c (Video)

Neither is what you’d call a “budget phone” – in fact each goes out of its way to avoid being painted with that particular brush. But they’re both devices that cater to a customer looking for something just shy of full flagship status. If you think you might be that customer, strap yourself in because we’re about to compare them. These smartphones aren’t necessarily new to us. We

From “no” to “whoa” in 15 months: a week on the new T-Mobile

T-Mobile is the most interesting carrier in the United States. Since John Legere came aboard as CEO in September 2012, the company has transformed from a staid, conflicted brand trying too hard to be “hip” to something legitimately compelling. T-Mobile’s “Uncarrier” push has seen the company nab the iPhone, wipe out international roaming charges, offer earlier device upgrades, eliminate ...

Xperia Z1 Compact unboxing (Video)

When we first went hands-on with the Z1 Compact at Sony’s CES 2014 press event, our heads were still ringing with Sony’s proclamation that despite its small size, it was a “no-compromise” flagship phone. Sony’s website makes the claim a bit plainer: The Xperia Z1 Compact is everything you expect in a premium smartphone, beautifully crafted to fit perfectly in the palm of your hand. The timing couldn’t be better for us to test this claim: we’ve just ...

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact owners reporting flash bleed problems

A smartphone camera’s flash seems almost deceptively simple: it needs to illuminate a scene while a picture’s being taken. With a xenon flash, timing can be a little tricky, but the LEDs so common on phones make the process a snap. As a result, we can begin to take a properly working flash a little bit for granted; it’s only when problems arise that we really take notice. Unfortunately for new owners of the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact, things have taken such an unwanted turn, and it seems that a design ...

Sony Xperia Z2: here’s what we want

Sony’s current flagship, the Xperia Z1 (or the Z1S here in the States) may only be a few months old, but that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from already pouring out word of its successor. The Xperia Z2 is said to be a lot of things – bigger, better, more powerful, and the rest of the typical hype-mongering buzzwords – and we’re hearing rumors that is just might show its face as

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact available at O2 UK

Whether you like black, lime, pink, or white, you can have any, if you’re in the UK, and consider O2′s offer for the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact. Announced at the beginning of the year in Las Vegas with the occasion of CES 2014, the Z1 Compact brings flagship specs to the smaller form factor. £479.99 is what you’ll have to pay if you choose the pay-as-you-go option (around $790), but things can get somewhat cheaper if you choose one of the tariffs. You won’t have a charger inside ...

Pocketnow Weekly 080: HTC M8 x, Galaxy Note 3 Neo, a $50 Motorola smartphone & a resurgent BlackBerry

”Our revels now are ended, Kirk.” That’s a quote from Star Trek VI, paraphrasing a line from Shakespeare’s The Tempest. In the latter instance (minus the “Kirk” bit) it’s a conceit of sorts, an admission that the play is a falsehood – and an observation that so, perhaps, is life. In the former example it’s a wisecrack from a Klingon bent on shooting our favorite captain’s ship out from under him. In both cases, it’s a kind of farewell. And in today’s example, it’s also a goodbye – to the old times. ...

Sony Xperia Z1S available on T-Mobile, as Z1 Compact gets root ahead of availability

The Sony Xperia Z1S, T-Mobile’s Xperia Z1, was one of the phones announced at this year’s CES in Las Vegas. It is basically your typical Xperia Z1, with some added carrier-specific bits, and an aluminum frame that has now been removed and replaced by a plastic one, while still maintaining the sandwiched glass build. It is now available on T-Mobile for a full retail price of $528, which translates to 24 ...

This is how Sony can improve its presence in the US

Sony is capable of making compelling smartphones. I have never for a second doubted that. The Xperia Z, my first device review for Pocketnow last year, was a stellar phone. Its design was great (though I’m not partial to the additional slab of glass), the specifications were on par with its counterparts from Samsung and HTC, and performance was not an issue. That said, the unit I received for review from Clove was not compatible with AT&T in my area. It supported UMTA bands 1, 5, and 8, and I was stuck switching ...

Pocketnow Weekly 078: CES 2014 wrap-up – the best and worst from Vegas

Horrible sickness. Missed flights. Broken promises from major airlines. Desert air-induced hacking. A too-late arrival followed by a too-early departure. That’s just a partial list of the challenges faced by the four-man three-man Pocketnow team at 2014′s International CES in Vegas, easily one of the most difficult trade shows we’ve ever done. But while the road was rough, the payoff was (mostly) worth it: in exchange for our hardships, we were among the first to spend time with some of the world’s newest and hottest mobile gadgetry, and we did the best we could to ...

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact: hands-on (Video)

By now, you probably know that the Sony Xperia Z1S isn’t arriving like we expected – as another spin on the Z1F. So if the Z1S is that different, larger hardware, what about the idea of an international Z1F – the one with the 4.3-inch 720p screen and the Snapdragon 800? Enter: the Xperia Z1 Compact. While small, it still looks extremely powerful, and it’s waterproof to boot. At CES 2014 in Las Vegas, we were able to swing by ...
