Android Nougat for ZTE Axon 7 is delayed ‘a little’ in Germany, still coming this quarter

Due to failed "quality requirements", Android 7.0 Nougat, Daydream and all, is no longer scheduled to roll out to the ZTE Axon 7 this month.

US Axon 7 Android Nougat Preview open for application

Your phone probably won’t receive Android 7.1.1. You may not get Android 7 on your Axon 7 by January — that’s what the Germans are being promised. But if you own the US variant of the phone, you’re free to sign up for the Android Nougat Beta Preview.

First off, make sure that you’re registered with ZTE’s Z-Community forums — that’s where that crowd-designed product idea competition took place — and that you’ve got an IMEI ready. Be aware of the non-disclosure agreement and any required tasks and surveys that need doing. Then, click on our source link to head into the application form.

If you are selected for participation, make sure you back up your data. There is no rollback option to the stable Marshmallow build. The goal time for the update’s commercial release will be made known to beta members.

Best Buy’s new and old Cyber Monday deals are for everyone

As always, Best Buy was one of the most generous US retailers on Thanksgiving and during the “Black Friday weekend”, not to mention many of its super-compelling holiday deals were available early in limited quantities.

And many still are for Cyber Monday, with several more inaugurated today and up for grabs just in the next few hours. Looking for a couple of solid bets at a quick glance? That’s where we come in, to tell you the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is $100 off list across the board, starting at $700 instead of $800 in a Wi-Fi-only 32GB configuration.

Don’t have that much to spend? Maybe a $170 64GB Apple TV will tickle your fancy, seeing as how it’s discounted by a rare $30 off its regular price. Ultra-affordable Android smartphone enthusiasts can perhaps pick up a Verizon prepaid Moto G4 Play at an all-time low $35, or if they’d rather go the unlocked route, a $100 Asus ZenFone 3 Max or $230 64GB Moto G4 Plus.

Meanwhile, the unlocked Sony Xperia XA and ZTE Axon 7 are not just $50 off, also hooking you up with free $50 and $30 gift cards respectively. Stylish wearable fans can save up to 60 percent on “select” Fossil Q Grant models, and last but not least, modular Moto Z phones purchased on Verizon monthly installment plans come with gratis speaker and battery charger add-ons, as well as $100 savings. Let’s just hope there’s still something in the bank after Black Friday… week.

Limited edition ZTE Axon 7 with 6GB RAM and Force Touch arrives stateside at $500

While the ZTE Axon 7 was back in the day unveiled with “up” to 6GB RAM, the affordable Android flagship’s top drawer SKU never made its way to US shores. The fast-rising albeit somewhat controversial Chinese OEM also failed to bring one of its experimental Force Touch-enabled devices stateside.

But everything has a beginning, and starting now, you can order a “limited edition” $500 Axon 7 from zteusa.com. Available in “Ion Gold” only, this “ultimate premium handset” offers Force Touch technology for a “more intuitive user experience”, bumping up internal storage to 128GB and the already generous 4 gig RAM count to a mobile record-matching 6GB as well.

Unfortunately, ZTE doesn’t try very hard to knock out any concerns you might have over the utility of the Force Touch tech also reportedly headed to the Galaxy S8 early next year, basically telling us nothing about how it really functions on iPhone rivals.

Still, the extra 64GB digital hoarding room and 2GB random-access memory should fully justify the $100 premium applied to the standard US ZTE Axon 7 variant. Both models come with the same 5.5-inch Quad HD screen, top-shelf Hi-Fi audio, Snapdragon 820 processor, 20MP OIS + EIS rear camera, 8MP selfie shooter, 4G LTE bands, fingerprint scanner, USB Type-C port, 3,250 mAh battery, and for the time being, Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Newegg jumps on Black Friday preview bandwagon with a number of enticing mobile deals

Not a big fan of computer hardware and software anymore? Not a problem, as Newegg also sells smartphones, tablets and intelligent wearable products at pretty great prices these days. More so around the holidays, of course, with the e-tailer’s Black Friday 2016 deal extravaganza detailed on the heels of similar Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, Target and Staples reveals.

Interested in a $250 ZTE Axon 7 Mini, $180 Asus ZenFone 3 Laser or perhaps an age-old, never-cheaper $180 32GB Apple iPad 4, but not really looking forward to spend the day (or night) after Thanksgiving furiously refreshing Newegg’s overloaded home webpage?

No need to wait so very long, as discounts will in fact be valid from next Monday, November 21, all the way through Saturday, November 26, at 11:59 pm PT. Quantities are obviously limited, though, and “subject to availability”, so be sure you check the Huawei Watch at $200 and up, or $220 ZTE Axon Pro off your shopping list as early as possible.

Windows convertible enthusiasts can opt for a $799 Microsoft Surface Pro 4 with Core i5, 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD or $470 i5 Surface Pro 3, while cash-strapped Android phone buyers have a $150 non-Pro original Axon and $200 Asus ZenFone Zoom to compare and contrast. Last but not least, the $350 Honor 8 will apparently come bearing “exclusive gifts.”

ZTE Axon 7 owners in Germany are promised January Android Nougat update

Only around 0.3 percent of the world’s Android devices were running OS build 7.0 as of November 7, according to Google’s official Play Store tracking. Although we’d badly like to believe there’s a miracle cure for fragmentation in the works, the fact of the matter is Nougat adoption rates will remain low for the foreseeable future.

Really, really low, as long as Samsung has barely started to publicly test N goodies for the S7 and S7 Edge, the LG G5 still needs time to spread the 7.0 love outside Korea, and Moto G4’s own makeover pack appears to be moving rather slowly after a surprisingly early Indian debut.

Then you have a number of OEMs that don’t realistically expect to upgrade a single product before 2017, either staying silent on their software support schedules or, in ZTE’s case, discreetly coming clean and trying to put a positive spin on things.

At least in Germany, but most likely worldwide, the Chinese hardware manufacturer vows to be ready to bring “delicious” Android 7.0 Nougat to the Axon 7 come January. That’s probably not the tardiest update 2016 high-end phone owners will be treated to, though we definitely expected better.

Remember, the recently released 5.5-inch ZTE Axon 7 was supposed to work on Google’s Daydream VR platform, which the search giant however is yet to corroborate. Maybe what the handheld needs to pair with the Daydream View headset is also coming in January.

ZTE Axon 7 Max supports naked eye 3D viewing, 3D photo-taking with dual 13MP cams

ZTE Axon 7 mini packs quite a punch in not-so-tiny body

And so it has come to this. 5.2-inch smartphones marketed as diminutive flagships. Or, as ZTE puts it in its Axon 7 mini-announcing press release, proof “power, performance and premium experience does not have to lack in a smaller form factor.”Smaller by just 0.3 inches, mind you, in screen diagonal, 4mm as far as device height goes, another 4 in width, and a “massive” 22 grams less in weight. Not long ago, the ZTE Axon 7 mini would have probably been deemed a giant, but now all of a sudden it’s ...
