Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 to include a pop-up camera?

Samsung may have some exciting changes planned for its next foldable. A World Intellectual Property Office application was published some days ago, and it contains images suggesting that the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 may arrive with a new pop-up camera system.

It seems that Samsung is or was planning on including a pop-up camera in its foldable phones. The company filed an application at the WIPO back in April, where we can clearly see a device featuring a pop-up mechanism inside one of the sides of the foldable phone, which could mean that the next Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 may arrive without an Infinity-O selfie camera. However, it could also mean that this design was planned for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold but got scratched before it became the phone’s final design.

This last possibility may seem more accurate since the phone’s sketches look almost identical to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, except for the lack of the punch hole selfie camera. What’s curious is how the device would seemingly allow you to activate this pop-up mechanism even when the phone was closed, meaning that it could also, eventually, replace the main rear-facing camera.

Now, Samsung may have decided to pass on this design since this would give an already pricey device more expensive moving parts, which would also increase the overall price tag of the device. Let’s also remember that rumors suggest that Samsung is already working on giving us a device with an under-display selfie camera, which would make this mechanism unnecessary in the end. We have also seen rumors claiming that Samsung may also change the technology used in its Galaxy Z Fold displays to finally give us a foldable device with stylus support, as well as a more durable folding Ultra-Thin Glass display.

Galaxy Z Fold 2 becomes available, while the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE gets caught in hands-on pictures

We have a combination of rumors and official news for you today. First, Samsung’s latest foldable device was announced on September 1, and it is now available for purchase in several countries around the world. At the same time, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S20 FE was caught on a series of hands-on pictures, and they’re all here for you to see.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 is now officially available in the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Thailand, France, and more European countries. This device arrives with two screens, the first one is a 7.6-inch foldable AMOLED display, and the second one is a 6.23-inch screen on the outer part of the device.

We find the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+ processor, 12GB RAM, and 256GB storage inside of this device. It includes a triple camera setup that features a 12MP primary sensor, a 12MP telephoto, and a 12MP ultrawide. We also get a 10MP selfie camera and a second 10MP camera, which is placed in the upper right half of the foldable display. Now, this won’t be a cheap device, and you know it. Why not focus on the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G?

We basically know everything we need about the new Galaxy S20 Fan Edition after the recent leak of its infographic. Now we get an idea of how the device may look in real life after @jimmyispromo has posted some real-life images of the device. He also includes some of the device’s specs, and an expected €700 price tag for European markets. Now, the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE will be launched next Wednesday, so you may want to wait a bit longer before deciding on your next Samsung phone.

Remember that this device is expected to arrive in a 5G variant with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor with a 4,500mAh battery, while the LTE-only version would include an Exynos 990 processor and a smaller battery. Both variants will share other specs such as RAM, storage space, cameras, and screen size.

Google’s upcoming ‘Sabrina’ Android TV dongle could cost just $49.99 as per a retail listing

It’s been a while since we’ve talked about Google’s Android TV dongle, Sabrina. Sabrina was leaked a few months ago with a similar design to the Chromecast but it would bring full blown Android TV and Stadia Support instead of just letting you cast. Now we have an alleged price tag that actually comes from Home Depot.. (break 4th barrier.. Wait, is this right, Home Depot?.. Like, they’re doing tech now?) as they briefly listed the device for $49.99 for the Rock Candy color variant. The listing was obviously pulled, but there is still a way to access it through cache. According to other leaks, Sabrina will also come in Cosmo Blue and Summer Melon. Sadly, the launch date is still a mystery because this is a Google Product, but we could expect it at the Google Pixel 5’s Event, if we have one.

Apple iPhone 11 was the world’s most-shipped smartphone in H1 2020: Omdia

We have a new quarter results from Omdia this time and, let’s just say that the iPhone 11 crushed everything in it’s path. These are global sales for the first half of 2020 and the iPhone 11 took the first spot with 37.7M units sold, just to give you some perspective, the Galaxy A51 is in second place with 11.4M. Apple dominated the market with 5 spots in this top ten. Xiaomi’s Redmi had 4 more spots as well meaning that the Galaxy A51 was the only phone from another brand to reach the chart. The iPhone SE is apparently fulfilling it’s purpose as it reached the top 5 with 8.7M units. We should be getting more results for Q2 soon to see how certain markets went but, it looks like Apple killed it globally.

Motorola RAZR 5G leak tips faster Snapdragon 765G chip, better cameras and larger battery

Yesterday we got the labeled pictures from Evan Blass and now, we have even more leaks of the Moto RAZR 5G. These new leaks come from Twitter where we get some high res renders of the device along with some specs. The renders show the device from the different angles, both open and closed and even sideways. According to the tipster, it’ll bring the Snapdragon 765G, a 48MP main camera, a 20MP shooter and an upgraded 2800 mAh battery. It apparently weighs 190g and he also provided the dimensions, saying it will be 8mm thick. Yesterday we also saw some different changes like the Polished Graphite color variant and that the fingerprint sensor will be on the Moto logo. So yeah, we’re already in September so we should expect an event very soon.

Chinese government could now block TikToK sale to US companies

We’ve had a little break from our ban section after Apple literally terminated Epic but, it looks like the news are back, with Tik Tok this time. Just to refresh your memory, the president of the US signed an executive order giving the company a certain amount of time to sell their operations to a US company, or they would be banned. Tik Tok responded with a lawsuit but they were in talks with Microsoft to sell their operations as, even Walmart wanted a piece of the pie. Well, according to The Guardian, Beijing just issued new restrictions or bans on tech exports, requiring companies to seek government approval, which can take up to 30 days, to sell their operations. Apparently the rule hadn’t been changed since 2008 and it is believed that it’s aimed at delaying the Tik Tok sale. Some of the technologies they added to the export restrictions list include, AI interfaces, voice recognition and content recommendation analysis, which is exactly what Tik Tok uses. ByteDance has agreed that they will strictly abide to these regulations but they didn’t elaborate on their next move. We still don’t understand how it might work in case they don’t end up selling to the US but, we’ll assume the ban would kick in.

Story of the day:

Around ten days ago some images of squared camera modules popped up but, these go along with the original and circular design we got from the OnLeak’s CAD renders. On these cases we can see some differences from the Mate 30, for example the larger camera module and it looks like we’re getting real volume rockers instead of the software solution we got from the Mate 30 Pro. Both of these models seem to be retaining the IR blaster and the regular Mate 40 may still bring a headphone jack. We’re expecting the new, and possibly last, Kirin chips that will power these phones at IFA, which is a few days away.

TikTok CEO Kevin Mayer quits amid turmoil

Yesterday was Epic’s day when it comes to the drama, now it’s Tik Tok’s turn. Back in May, Kevin Mayer left Disney to become Tik Tok’s CEO in the US operations. Well, he just decided to step down from his position amidst of all the political turmoil he’s been facing. In the meantime, Tik Tok’s General Manager, Vanessa Pappas, will be leading the company. On a statement Mayer said that, due to the sharp change in the political environment, he did a significant reflection on the structural changes that this would require and what that means for his role. Therefore, he’s deciding to step down from the company. Also, on a new report from CNBC, Walmart is partnering up with Microsoft to purchase the US operations of Tik Tok but, the details for this move haven’t been disclosed yet.

iPhone 12 without chargers or Earpods confirmed?

Let’s start talking about Apple, mainly with the iPhone 12 for this segment. There’s been multiple reports and predictions telling us that we won’t be getting the charging brick or the EarPods on the box. Well, according to a new research note from TrendForce, this will be the case. According to them, Apple will be removing these accessories from the box because of the manufacturing costs will significantly increase due to 5G and removing these will help them keep the price tag. Of course they also mentioned that this might drive even more sales for the AirPods and also because it helps reduce e-waste. A lot of trusted sources have reported on this so it looks like it’s a done deal.

New Apple iPad and Watch Series 6 are just around the corner

We know that the only way to call Apple’s current release strategy is with the word staggered. A couple of weeks ago we covered a tweet from Jon Prosser, where he detailed Apple’s launch dates for the Fall. The first part of the tweet covered the new Apple Watch and iPad, which according to him would launch before everything else on the week of September 7th. Well, a new iPad and a new Apple Watch just went through the Eurasian Economic Commission, hinting that the launch date will be happening very soon. The iPad is listed as an “Apple tablet computer” with 7 model number’s for the different storage tiers and color variants, oh and they run iPadOS 14. The Apple Watch Series 6 also made the cut with 8 model numbers, and they’re all listed running WatchOS 7. Again, even if the iPhones are delayed, we are expecting these to come out sometime around September 7th with a silent release so, we’ll keep you posted.

Sony’s Xperia 5 II appears in leaked render, shows off familiar design with a tall display

It’s been a while since we’ve gotten a global flagship from Sony but, it looks like the company is back at it. We have a new high resolution render from Evan Blass of the Sony Xperia 5 II. This naming scheme hints that this might be a minor upgrade of the Xperia 5 which launched last year, right about this time at IFA. It’ll retain Sony’s 21:9 aspect ratio with the thin side bezels, and the even top and bottom bezels which aren’t too slim. It also brings a triple camera setup at the back with the same “ZEISS T” branding. This is a teal color variant but, sadly we don’t have any details on the internals or a possible launch date just yet so we’ll have to keep you posted on that one.

New LG Wing with rotating dual screen has been caught on video

We know that LG has been reluctant to adopt foldables when most of the competition is at least testing the waters with this market, and by the way, this is the company with the roll able TV. Instead we’ve been getting dual screen devices like my personal favorite, the Velvet. However, we do know that they are working on a rotating screen device codenamed “Wing“. Well, Android Authority recently published a 10 second clip of the phone fully working on someone’s car. On the video you can see him getting map directions on the primary display while controlling the music with the secondary screen. After that, the driver also takes a phone call on the secondary display. Something interesting here is that there seems to be no notch or punch hole on the display. This device is most likely targeted at people who want a multi-tasking device so it might be a good balance between phones like the Z Fold 2 and the Surface Duo.

Samsung is reportedly working on three new foldable devices already

We’re still waiting for the official launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 but, now we get even more rumors of Samsung’s roadmap for their foldables. According to a tipster on Twitter, Samsung will be launching at least three new foldables. The list starts with the Galaxy Z Fold Lite which will apparently bring a CPI display instead of the UTG which we get on the newer variants. Next up, we got the Galaxy Z Fold 3 which we talked about yesterday and this one will apparently bring S Pen features and, this tipster mentions it as well and according to him, it might bring a hefty price tag. Finally, there’s a Z Fold S which will apparently be a new form factor that folds both in and out. We don’t exactly know when we’ll be getting these device but, if Samsung does get rid of the Note line with the S21, this could be Samsung’s fall line-up.

Fortnite on Apple devices is losing cross-play support with the new season on August 27

Epic Games confirms Fortnite’s next season won’t come to iPhones, iPads, and Macs

Let’s get back to the Epic vs Apple drama because, it’s getting really interesting now. Epic released a blog post today where they said that “Apple is blocking Fortnite updates and new installs on the App Store, and has said they will terminate our ability to develop Fortnite for Apple devices. As a result, Fortnite’s new Chapter 2, Season 4 will not be released on iOS and Macs tomorrow“. This means that if you have Fortnite on your iPad, iPhone or Mac, you’ll technically still be able to play but, here’s where it gets interesting. Epic also announced that there will no longer be cross-play between Apple devices and PCs, Consoles and Android phones as, there will be two separate versions of the game. One for iOS and Macs, with the older season and no updates, and one for the rest of the community with the latest and greatest. This is kind of a weird development considering that to play on the Mac, you download it through the Epic installer and not the App Store. Again, Apple is still ready to welcome Epic back, once they remove their in-app payment option but, it looks like Epic wants to take a separate route. There’s also a hearing happening in a month so, we’ll see how this ends.

Story of the day:

Here’s your first hands-on video of the iPhone 12 Pro Max

And finally the most interesting news have to do with iPhone 12 Pro, or at least one of the variants, and the idea of 120hz on the display. If you remember, yesterday we did cover the different screenshots with the camera settings and the 120Hz display. And sure we know some of you might not necessarily believe a screenshot given how easy it is to tinker with them. Well right after, Jon Prosser owned his leaks by later posting a full hands on video with the phone showing off other details. Also, keep in mind that this is a Production Validating and Testing unit of the iPhone 12 Pro Max so, these features might still not make it to the final product. On it we get to see the person turn on the high refresh rate and the adaptive 120Hz refresh rate, he also browsed through the camera options that we covered yesterday and we also get to see some design changes. If you look closely, the display is kinda larger, taller and the bezels are getting thinner, which makes it seem like the notch is smaller but, it really isn’t. Prosser also mentioned other changes, including that the camera array is now 10% larger, the glass is flat but it’ll have a slight curve and that Face ID will now work from more angles like the iPad Pro can, even if the phone is laying on a flat surface. So yeah, there is a working prototype of the 120Hz iPhone 12 Pro, let’s just hope it makes it to the final unit.

Here’s a Galaxy Z Fold 2 review video before Samsung could reveal more on September 1

When Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 2 at its unpacked event earlier this month, the company only gave a brief video preview of the device and promised to reveal more details about it on September 1. But before that happens and Samsung’s new foldable phone could hit the shelves, a full-fledged Galaxy Z Fold 2 review video has been posted on YouTube, giving us our first glimpse of the slick device while being used.

Now, the video is in Chinese, and since I don’t speak or understand the language, I can’t tell you how it fared in the review. But what we do get is an up-close look at the Galaxy Z Fold 2 from all angles, including its redesigned hinge, the larger cover display and the inner foldable panel. But here are a few key takeaways from the video:

Image: YouTube / 灵感研究所

The cover display on the Galaxy Z Fold 2 now occupies almost the entire front panel, while the Galaxy Fold had ugly thick bezels on the cover display. And thanks to the larger screen real estate, the cover display can now be used for tasks like gaming without any second thoughts.

And thanks to the hole punch, the inner foldable panel of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 looks cleaner and more immersive compared to the Galaxy Fold, which had a huge notch in the right corner.

Unfortunately though, it appears that the crease in the middle of the foldable panel is here to stay, just the way it was easily noticeable on the Galaxy Fold.

An interesting new use case scenario is that the cover display of the Galaxy Z fold 2 can be used as a viewfinder to click selfies and record high-resolution vlogs using the rear cameras, a feature will be a huge deal for content creators. In the meanwhile, here’s what Pocketnow’s Jaime Rivera thinks about it:
