Samsung tablets: more isn’t always better

In the tablet space, Samsung is a quickly growing giant. Almost single-handed, Samsung has cut Apple’s tablet market share in half – from over 60 percent in 2012 to 30 percent in Q1 this year – while snapping up 23 percent of the global tablet share in Q1.We never had any doubt this would be the case, even with how half-baked the first two or three generations of its tablets were. Take the original Galaxy Tab, for example. It was a 7-inch knee-jerk reaction to the iPad. It ran Android, of course, ...

Pocketnow Weekly 086: @evleaks

“What would you say to the people who think that what you do is illegal?” ” … I would tell them that I don’t want to answer this question.” When you’re interviewing the world’s most notorious phone leaker, he’s bound to duck a question or two. But cautious though he is, Evan Blass –formerly of Pocketnow and currently known across the web by his pen name

Verizon quietly introduces LTE-enabled Galaxy NotePRO 12.2

It’s a tale of two tablets: one week ago, we saw a leak indicating that Verizon was planning on adding both the LG G Pad 8.3 and Samsung’s Galaxy NotePRO 12.2 to its offerings today, on March 6. We had already gotten confirmation from Samsung that the carrier would introduce the tablet sometime this quarter, but there still wasn’t an official date. Then on Tuesday Verizon issued a statement which verified that the G Pad 8.3 would indeed ...

Release dates leak for Verizon tablets from Samsung, LG

Samsung’s Galaxy NotePRO 12.2 may be a serious tablet heavyweight, but it’s also got a premium sticker price to match, selling for $750 on up. If you’ve been hoping that a carrier subsidy might be a nice way to bring that figure down a little you’re in luck, as we’ve already seen evidence of a Verizon-branded NotePRO 12.2 leak. But when might such a device actually arrive? If we’re to believe a new leak, it ...

Could pricing ruin the Galaxy NotePRO 12.2′s chance at success?

One of the most exciting devices out of CES this year was easily Samsung’s monstrous Note tablet, the Galaxy NotePRO 12.2. On paper, it’s nothing terribly mind-blowing. It’s quite literally the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition, which we reviewed last year, on a much larger scale. Inside, it has the same 3GB RAM, 32 or 64GB of fixed storage with expansion via microSD, a 9,500mAh battery, and one of two SoCs. Like ...

Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 render leaked

The Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 should land, on Verizon, as a first, with 4G LTE connectivity, later this quarter. We’ve learned this, and more, about Samsung’s CES tablet line-up from a recent Samsung official press release. While it could land even at the end of March, and still be “later this quarter”, we’re getting a look at the Verizon Note Pro 12.2 in this leaked render. Courtesy of @evleaks, we’re seeing the large tablet rendered above, with rater prominent ...

Samsung fills in the blanks on US Galaxy NotePRO, TabPRO launch

Yesterday we started getting some answers to the questions we’ve been asking for the past several weeks about the commercial availability of the new Samsung Galaxy TabPRO and NotePRO tablets. The big detail we wanted to see filled-in was pricing, and we got that as a retailer opened pre-orders of the 64GB NotePRO 12.2 and the 32GB TabPRO 12.2. Those two only make up a fraction of the full lineup, so luckily Samsung comes through today with details on the rest. Remember, we already saw the 64GB NotePRO 12.2 ...

Galaxy NotePRO, TabPRO 12.2 US pricing finally arrives

Samsung’s Galaxy NotePRO 12.2 is one beast of a tablet. From the giant, high-res screen, to the best-in-class SoC options, and even to the compelling new Magazine UX, there’s a lot to like here. But all these top-tier specs don’t come cheaply, and it was clear from the get-go that this would be an expensive device. What we’ve been trying to suss-out over the past few weeks, though, has been just how expensive it would ultimately be. ...

Samsung opens UK Galaxy NotePRO 12.2 pre-orders as we fret about US pricing

Samsung’s four latest Android tablets, the NotePRO and three TabPRO models introduced at CES, all have some enviable hardware, and represent a big step forward from the sort of selection we saw in the Galaxy Tab 3 lineup. While we’re anxious to see these models go up for sale, we’re also just a bit concerned about pricing, with fears that it’s all going to be prohibitively expensive. What we don’t have yet, though, is ...

Samsung’s Magazine UX: hot or not?

It’s easy to be overly critical of Samsung. The company is larger than some of its biggest competitors several times over, and it has the man power, resources, and know-how to not make some pretty obvious mistakes over and over again. We’ve reamed Samsung more than once for shipping substandard products with laughably awful software and performance optimization. TouchWiz UX, for example, has shipped on dozens of Samsung products over the years. It’s not only long in the tooth, cluttered, and … ugly, it ...
