The Pixel’s purple camera crash problem may be with geolocation

A purple screen and distorted memories are what many Google Pixel users in Europe have been dealing with for more than a month now.

An issue stemmed in the Google Pixel User Community by Mike Fox on October 27 showed what appeared to be a major problem with the Pixel taking pictures with the Google Camera app. Snapped results would often end up with the frame “off-sync,” where a portion of the picture is shifted to the opposite side of where it should be. Bright magenta bars tint portions of the image as well.

All of this would frequently end up freezing the phone upon review.

After testing with third-party apps, complete data wipes, secondary units and further reports — many of them from the UK and Germany using the international Pixel SKU, though there was an isolated case with a US-bought Pixel XL on Verizon being used in Italy — along the thread were not able to pin down the problem for some time.

Then it was suggested that the problem could be related to how data reception is for any particular area. The risk is especially heightened in poorer 2G spots. Pictures taken on Airplane Mode did not cause the issue. At this point, we’re inclined to guess that automatic cloud backup may be a factor in causing the bug to show up though from further posts, it seems that geolocation tagging may be a bigger culprit.

The Pixel’s camera has also been affected by a “halo effect” caused by the glass. Google promised that a software update would remedy the issue. A software update that was sent to Canadian Pixel units may have the fix on this case, but it has not been sent to other regions that we know of.

MobileSyrup has contacted Google for a response to this issue.

Selling T-Mobile may not be in the cards for Deutsche Telekom after all

While Deutsche Telekom is antsy about the incoming Trump administration’s impact on telecom regulation in the US, its CEO is “not in the mood” to try and sell its 65 percent stake in T-Mobile.

Tim Hoettegees told a conference of telecom investors at a Morgan Stanley event that “Oh where is the partner we need?” is not a question his company is asking because of a rapid turnaround that has seen its subsidiary grow to rival its parent German operations.

According to Reuters, T-Mobile US earned the equivalent of €2.156 billion last year before taxes, depreciation and amortization. Deutsche Telekom reaped in €2.25 billion in EBITDA. And 14 quarters of subscriber base growth in the states is nothing to scoff at — thank the unit’s CEO, John Legere, for some fun initiatives to spike it off.

“We are now open to how we could create something beyond our execution, which is creating value,” Hoetteges said. “I am not afraid about whether a (pure) mobile player can survive in this environment. If there are any options, we are going to consider.”

One of those options Deutsche Telekom may be interested in is pairing T-Mobile with a content provider, like AT&T has done in signing an $85 billion takeover deal with Time Warner. But this is far from any rumors about courting Comcast for a buyout and even farther from the days of AT&T and Sprint trying their hands at a corporate coupling.

Retail employee prevents cancellation of AirPod sale by spilling shipping date

If you’ve been waiting too many weeks to finally see your wireless AirPods on your doorstep, you now have new solace to keep on the pre-order line and not cancel.

A customer named Harald called into the customer service of German tech retail chain Conrad to cancel his AirPods pre-order, locked in on October 14. The representative, perhaps wanting to save a sale and weighing various factors, decided to try and convince Harald to keep his pre-order on. And they were successful in doing so.

Why? Well, Harald told Apfelpage.de that he was told that Conrad would have stock starting around November 17 and that deliveries could happen the next day or the day after. Reportedly. And, so far as we can track this, only in Germany.

Perhaps Apple is finally ready not to stall its customers from realizing their $150+ investment any further. We shall see.

What could LG V20 S trademark in Europe mean?

Europe is assured not to see the LG V20 in its most common form direct from retailers. Heck, even UK unlocked smartphone retailer Clove wasn’t able to snag the phone through its backchannel negotiations.

But a version of the V20 could be headed the continent’s way anyways. That’s at least what we’re speculating with a trademark appearance at the EU’s Intellectual Property Office.

An trademark protection application from LG for the “V20 S” was filed yesterday. The word mark can apply to “Smartphones; Portable communications apparatus” among other wireless equipment.

No associated leaks have been dug up just yet on the V20 S. We do know that there was an LG G5 SE that featured a lesser Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 than the 820 on regular G5 units. On the other hand, there’s an off-chance that this could be European branding for the smaller, water-resistant V34 that’s currently exclusively sold in Japan.

We’ll have to wait and see if this trademark gets activated — the holiday season is essentially upon us.

Google Daydream View hitting retail worldwide on November 10

Google was able to see Lenovo’s Project Tango phone kick off sales today, but in addition to augmented reality, there’s also a development in the virtual reality world today… well, technically Project Tango is working under the wing of Daydream VR, but it’s another kick-off of sales anyways.

Google’s own Daydream View headset will actually come offline for sales at $79 in the US, $99 in Canada, $119 in Australia and £69 or €69 in the UK or Germany. The magic date for sales and first shipments is November 10.

In addition to the Google Store, you may choose to wait to buy the teched-up piece of lovely upholstery at Verizon stores across the United States. Canada will see the sets at Rogers, Telus and Best Buy while Europe will get them at EE, Carphone Warehouse and Deutsche Telekom. Aussies can head over to JB Hi-Fi or Telstra.

In nine days, the new headset officially will usher in a new Daydream VR platform for Android Nougat with a new mission for how the operating system will interface and play in a new medium.
