Huawei promises to officially update Honor 8 to Nougat sometime in February

While Samsung’s global smartphone sales dominance looks to go unchallenged for time to come, despite huge QA scandals, a number of rivals and challengers are currently outperforming the champ in terms of software support.

Sony, Motorola, LG, HTC and even Huawei can crow over their superior Android Nougat update roadmaps, whereas the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are stuck in a seemingly endless loop of public beta tests.

Granted, the world’s third largest handheld manufacturer also chose to go down the open pre-release N trial path for the greatly popular Honor 8. But at the same time, the P9 and Mate 8 recently scored fully polished 7.0 goodies OTA in China, with the Honor 8 set to wrap up all beta experiments before long.

Specifically, sometime in February, when the masses will begin receiving their final Android 7.0 Nougat + EMUI 5.0 upgrades. As always, the essential OS promotion shall go out in waves, meaning not all users may gain their software makeover by the end of the aforementioned month.

In addition to all your traditional N tweaks and enhancements, multi-window view, quick app switching and Doze on the Go included, the Huawei Honor 8 should be looking at a bunch of EMUI-specific changes and improvements too, like the ability to run different profiles in parallel, machine learning, a more intelligent power management system, and extra “flexibility around security.” Nice!

Huawei’s Android Nougat to debut on P9, Mate 8 today in China

With all the fuss about betas and super software updates from Google, Samsung, HTC and Lenovo (among others), we haven’t really covered the Android Nougat path for Huawei’s hardware.

The Huawei Mate 9 already features the smarter and cleaner EMUI 5.0 on top of Android 7.0, though, so its’ only a matter of time that the P9, Mate 8 and other entries from Honor get their fixings. But how much time?

Apparently, the software roadmap puts us closer than you might think. According to a thread on the Chinese Huawei Club forums, the P9 and Mate 8 will get their official Nougat updates today. The Honor 8 and V8 are going through their first full beta builds right now and so is the Huawei P9 Plus. The mid-range Huawei Nova is currently shuttling its first betas out as well. We presume more phones will be tacked onto that list as time goes on.

Keep in mind that these dates are not global, so we’ll probably have to bide our time elsewhere.

Huawei unveils top holiday deals on phones, tablets and wearables at many third-party sellers

With the hot new Mate 9 powerhouse phablet not quite ready for US primetime yet, Huawei gadget enthusiasts are left scrambling for the best Black Friday and Cyber Monday savings on older and/or humbler products like the Honor 8 phone, Fit smartband, Watch, MediaPad M3 tablet and MateBook 2-in-1 laptop.

While the Chinese device manufacturer doesn’t appear to have any plans for looming holiday deals offered directly through its American e-store, we’re happy to bring you a neat collection of third-party retail promos with various start and end dates today.

Already, the recently unveiled Huawei Fit is available on Amazon, Best Buy and Newegg for $99.99, down 30 bucks from its regular $130 price point. The convertible Windows 10-based MateBook tablet is $200 off list over at Microsoft until December 2 with a Portfolio Keyboard bundled in, or $300 off when bought alongside a MatePen and MateDock in addition to the aforementioned keyboard.

Then you have pretty routine discounts of up to $200 on “select” Huawei Watch styles at Amazon, Best Buy, Newegg, Google, Target, and B&H also valid through December 2. Between November 25 and 28 only, the just-launched MediaPad M3 Android slate goes $50 off on Amazon to $249, and last but certainly not least, the already affordable Honor 8 flagship phone will set you back $300 instead of $400 with 32GB storage, or $350 in a 64 gig config at Best Buy, Amazon, Newegg, and B&H.

Newegg jumps on Black Friday preview bandwagon with a number of enticing mobile deals

Not a big fan of computer hardware and software anymore? Not a problem, as Newegg also sells smartphones, tablets and intelligent wearable products at pretty great prices these days. More so around the holidays, of course, with the e-tailer’s Black Friday 2016 deal extravaganza detailed on the heels of similar Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, Target and Staples reveals.

Interested in a $250 ZTE Axon 7 Mini, $180 Asus ZenFone 3 Laser or perhaps an age-old, never-cheaper $180 32GB Apple iPad 4, but not really looking forward to spend the day (or night) after Thanksgiving furiously refreshing Newegg’s overloaded home webpage?

No need to wait so very long, as discounts will in fact be valid from next Monday, November 21, all the way through Saturday, November 26, at 11:59 pm PT. Quantities are obviously limited, though, and “subject to availability”, so be sure you check the Huawei Watch at $200 and up, or $220 ZTE Axon Pro off your shopping list as early as possible.

Windows convertible enthusiasts can opt for a $799 Microsoft Surface Pro 4 with Core i5, 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD or $470 i5 Surface Pro 3, while cash-strapped Android phone buyers have a $150 non-Pro original Axon and $200 Asus ZenFone Zoom to compare and contrast. Last but not least, the $350 Honor 8 will apparently come bearing “exclusive gifts.”

Huawei was reportedly Google’s plan A for the unsung Pixel and Pixel XL manufacturer

The world’s third most popular smartphone vendor is obviously pretty big in China, from where it hails, as well as a few other Asian markets, and even Western Europe. But despite great ambitions and substantial recent efforts of gaining a US foothold, Huawei still has a long way to go.At least that’s what credible inside sources claim, describing among others the MateBook as an “absolute flop” in the land of the free, local Honor 5X sales as just ...
