Apple Watch Edition Series 1 gone from Apple Store

No more five-digit checkouts on the Apple Store — for an Apple Watch, at least. The gold case, branded as the Apple Watch Edition for Series 1 of the product and costing $10,000 for the 38mm case, has been discontinued. In fact, even the regular Apple Watch stainless steel case is gone from the online store. Apple Watch Series 2 announced with water-resistance, GPS

The second series of Apple Watch has been announced. It runs watchOS 3 and you can literally swim with it.Like most water-resistant watches, the Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport and Apple Watch Edition are rated for 50 meters of ingress. With any device that has a speaker, this is where the main ingress concerns are as a speaker requires air to propagate sound. Apple has redesigned the speakers to push water out if any gets in. Swimmers also get two workout modes in Apple Health. The Apple S2 system package includes a dual-core processor that’s 50 percent faster and a GPU that provides ...

So far, Apple Watch price cut is so good for sales

Check out that huge spike in Apple Watch sales. Yep, that actually happened right after Tim Cook announced a $50 price cut for the Apple Watch Sport. It’s also good to note that we’ve pretty much seen a doubling in sales sustained over about a month’s time. In fact, Slice Intelligence believes it has measured a 250 percent increase in average daily sales from before to after the March 21 event. ...

Apple Watch Sport now slightly more affordable to repair

If you thought keeping a smartphone in good condition – avoiding cracked screens, dinged-up metal edges, and scuffed plastic backs – was hard enough, that’s got nothing on protecting a smartwatch. Constantly exposed to doorknobs, sharp corners, and countless other hazards looking to mar their finishes, it’s almost a miracle we’re able to keep them in good condition for more than a few hours. As a result, it’s not surprising that many users find themselves in need of smartwatch repair at one time or another. Luckily for Apple watch owners, some of those repairs ...

The Pocketnow Holiday Shopping Guide 2015

Step back from the food court, I repeat, step back from the food court. Move away from the deals. Seriously, though, you might be on a sales safari come this weekend or a cyber chase on Monday. Apple Watch Sport owners already complaining about signs of wear and tear

Signs of wear and tear are common to gadgets, and particularly to wearables. The 4 worst arguments against the smartwatch

I remember the moment I realized smartwatches had a chance at being the next big thing in mobile. It was the spring of 2012, I’d just spent a week with the original Pebble, and I suddenly found myself unable to live without it. It was 1999 all over again: I was a wristwatch-wearing man, and leaving the house without it prompted angry expletives and a day full of accidental glances at an empty wrist.Three years later, smartwatches have made the jump to the mainstream consciousness. No longer ...

Empty Nest: what I miss (and don’t) about the Apple Watch

I’ve learned that there are two things about being a mobile technology reviewer. The first thing: you get to handle awesome gadgetry days or weeks ahead of its official release date, and you’re not just allowed to use the heck out of it; you need to, in order to do your job. That’s the awesome thing. The other (less-awesome) thing: you eventually have to give it all back.Empty Nest is a recurring column discussing what I miss -and what I don’t- about the devices I’ve had to return.•I ...

How long can Apple keep profit margins ridiculously high?

By now, you might’ve seen the IHS and Slice Intelligence figures. If not, here’s a quick summary: the standard 38mm Apple Watch Sport Band costs $2.05 for Apple to make and it is selling them for $49 each. The disclaimer here is that marketing, shipping and other associated costs aren’t included here. That said, Apple prices nearly all, if not all of its products for profit because otherwise, it wouldn’t be in business. This is beyond
