Google bundles $25 Chromecast 2015 and $69 Chromecast Ultra with 3 months of HBO Now

Turning your dumb old TV set into a relatively smart one you can wirelessly control using a connected mobile device or PC is already extremely easy and crazy cheap, courtesy of digital media dongles from Google, Amazon or Roku.

But for a limited time, two of the most popular such streaming products are available at even lower prices than usual, with some very attractive additional video on demand service also thrown in for free.

Discounted to $25 across several third-party retailers, the second-generation Chromecast is now $10 off list direct from the US Google Store as well, three months of HBO Now included. It’s almost like they are paying you to get this ageless, simple, versatile and powerful little HDMI content streamer, since normally, just the first HBO Now month would be free of charge.

The next two typically cost $15 each, letting you enjoy all the John Oliver, Westworld, Veep and Game of Thrones you can handle. Plus, new movies every week.

The special Black Friday offer is good for $69 Chromecast Ultra purchases too, and while the non-Ultra variant’s $25 deal expires Monday, November 28, you get nearly an entire extra month to sign up for a free 90-day HBO Now subscription. Only new members allowed.

Google Cast? Chromecast Built-In — new name, same great taste?

Google Cast apparently couldn’t evoke an attachment to the technology that allows your TV and speakers to be controlled by an Android phone or Google Home.

“What’s a Google Cast, huh?”

Well, you might not get too far with using the Chromecast name, either, but it’s the name of the product and more in-your-face than “Google Cast.”

That’s mostly the reason Google gave to VARIETY for Google Cast’s name change to “Chromecast Built-in”.

First, nothing about the technology has changed. We’re rebranding Google Cast to “Chromecast built-in” to help users identify the technology that they’ve come to enjoy and appreciate. The new branding officially starts in 2017, which is why you’ll see it slowly rolling out in the meantime.

And with a new brand name comes a new Twitter handle.

The Google Cast app has gone the way of the do-do, too, as the Google Home name replaces it.

Samsung Galaxy S7 and iPhone 7 headline Target’s massive list of Black Friday deals

Following in an arch-rival’s footsteps, America’s second-largest discount retailer has just willingly unveiled its fast-approaching Black Friday 2016 deal bonanza, and while we can’t help but notice a few similarities to what Staples has in the pipeline, Target will cater to a much wider range of bargain hunters.

Without further ado, we’d like to direct your attention to several mobile and wearable must-buys available at their lowest prices in deeply limited quantities starting Thanksgiving Day.

Target lends Samsung a hand with its Note 7 recovery efforts by shining the spotlight on the Korean company’s top replacements. Both the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge activated on Verizon, AT&T or Sprint are to hook you up with free $250 gift cards, Gear VR headsets, and $50 worth of Oculus content.

Meanwhile, the hot new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus on the same three carriers will net you “just” complimentary $250 coupons, though you’ll be able to save good money on some other Apple products too.

Namely, the iPad mini 2, Air 2, Pro 9.7, all Apple TV models still around, Apple Watch Series 1, and yes, even the Series 2. If you want a cheaper wearable, look for the $50 Garmin Vivofit Jr., $60 Vivofit 3, $120 Vivosmart HR+, $90 Fitbit Charge HR, $100 Alta, or $130 Charge 2. Last but not least, don’t forget about obligatory markdowns on latest-generation Chromecast and Fire TV Stick media streamers.

Staples has solid Black Friday deals on Amazon gear, Surface Pro 4 and more in the pipeline

And so it begins. The first major US retailer to voluntarily reveal its upcoming Black Friday deal bonanza is Staples, with special online sales scheduled to start Thursday, November 24, followed by the typical brick and mortar store stampede at 6 am on Friday the 25th.

Supplies will obviously be limited, customers can only buy one unit of each heavily discounted item, and if you prefer, you can order on the web during your festive Thanksgiving dinner, then swing by a physical location for in-person pickup anytime on Friday.

You’re looking at countless marked-down PCs, laptops, monitors, printers, accessories, and even office chairs here, but as far as our mobile-focused readership is concerned, possibly the most compelling BF 2016 bargains are to include $33.33 Amazon Fire 7 and $80 Fire HD 8 tablets.

A $100 Samsung Galaxy Tab A 7.0 or $130 Tab A 8.0, reduced from their regular list prices of $150 and $200 respectively, don’t sound half bad either. And then you have the convertible Surface Pro 4 Windows 10 machine Microsoft just “forgot” to upgrade, due for a hefty $200 rebate off its $1,000 MSRP with a Core i5 processor, 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD in tow.

Finally, Staples intends to allow you to liven up the living room by paying very little for the Amazon Echo Dot smart speaker ($40 instead of $50), Fire TV Stick ($30 instead of $40), or second-gen Google Chromecast ($25, not $35).
