Apple patent suggests that a matte black MacBook might become a reality

Okay, so I count myself among the folks who live by the motto of ‘Matte Black Everything.’ From coffee mugs to gaming peripherals, I always stick with a uniform black shade. However, there are a tonne of other devices I would love to buy in black, but they simply don’t come in that shade, with a MacBook clad in black being at the top of the list. However, it appears that Apple is at least toying with the technology that could turn the dreams of a matte black MacBook into reality.

What does the Apple patent say?

A patent filed before the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) indicates that Apple is experimenting with a technique that involves achieving a matte black surface finish on an anodized metallic surface. Titled “ANODIZED PART HAVING A MATTE BLACK APPEARANCE” and first spotted by the folks over at PatentlyApple, the patent talks about imparting light-absorbing features to the surface of a dyed anodized part (or enclosure) that can absorb all light falling on the surface to achieve a black appearance. And by the language used in the patent description, we are likely talking about a portable electronic device that uses an enclosure and has internal components that dissipate heat.

Apple notes that conventional industry techniques used by consumer electronic device manufacturers have failed at achieving a true black color, and the best they could get was a dark grey shade. Talking about one such method that involves an ‘enclosure for a portable electronic device’, the patent mentions “forming an anodized layer that overlays a metal substrate, infusing color particles within pores of the anodized layer, and forming light-absorbing features on an external surface of the anodized layer by etching the external surface.”

          More than just eye candy

However, imparting a matte black shade to an electronic device such as a MacBook will have some functional benefits as well, apart from being just eye candy. One of those use case scenarios involves preventing light from reflecting off the camera and using the heat-absorbing properties of the matte black surface for thermal management y cooling the internals from within. Read it for yourself:

          • When an enclosure that is colored black absorbs light, the enclosure can transform the light into heat. Accordingly, implementing the techniques described herein for coloring an anodized layer a true black can cause the enclosure to absorb a greater amount energy and promote cooling from within.
          • In another example, the enclosure of the portable computer 108 can function as a heat dissipater, such as a heatsink, that is colored black to efficiently draw heat and dissipate heat generated by operational components (e.g., battery, processor, etc.) carried within the portable computer 108.
          • For example, the smartphone 102 can include an internal structure such as a camera housing, where it can be beneficial for the camera housing to have a colored black surface that absorbs generally all visible light such as to prevent and/or minimize reflections of visible light that would otherwise affect an amount of light detected by a sensor of the camera.

As mentioned above, the matte black finished on an anodized enclosure can yield some functional benefits for varied form factors that include both smartphones and computers. But this is a patent we’re talking about here, which means it might not necessarily be used on a large scale for a mass-market device such as a MacBook or an iPhone.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 732G SoC goes official; to debut on a POCO smartphone

We know that Qualcomm is really pushing their Snapdragon 7 Series for 5G mid-rangers. Well, the company just announced a new Snapdragon 732G. This new SoC brings a Krypto 470 CPU at up to 2.3GHz and an Adreno 618 GPU which according to them, offers 15% improved graphics over the 730G. Besides these performance improvements, it also allows for Qualcomm’s Elite Gaming for ultra-realistic gameplay in over a billion shades of color. It features the 4th Gen Qualcomm AI Engine and the Snapdragon X15 LTE modem. We have the full list of technical details and specs in the links below, and this new chip is expected to debut with the leaked POCO X3 which we covered last week.

The price of the new LG Wing may not be so compelling

We’ve been getting an interesting amount of leaks for the LG Wing, considering that it is still a concept. So far we’ve gotten two videos of this dual screen-rotating device fully working from Android Authority, and now we get a possible price tag. According to a South Korean publication, the Wing will cost $1600, making it the most expensive LG phone yet. However, an anonymous source talked to XDA Developers and claims that the phone could cost $1000 in the United States which might still be the most expensive LG phone. The source also confirmed that these videos from Android Authority are the real deal. The confusing part is that, there’s still no rumors of the phone entering production or even a possible time line for the launch date. We’ll keep you posted as, the leaks just keep increasing for it.

New leaks of AT&T’s Moto RAZR 2020 have emerged

Speaking of dual screens and foldables, we’re pretty much in September already which means we’re getting closer to the new Moto RAZR. Now we have some new leaks from Evan Blass for the AT&T variant. These are fully labeled pictures of the phone and they reveal more details like the 20MP selfie shooter and the 48MP main camera. You also get to see the new design elements like the outer display which is bigger now, the slimmer bezels on the front and the fingerprint sensor is now on the Moto logo at the back. We’re expecting this phone to be powered by the Snapdragon 765G, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage with a possible launch date on September 9th.

New leaks could give us our first look at the new OnePlus 8T

Believe it or not, we’re getting closer and closer to the OnePlus 8T’s usual launch time. Well, we have some sort of a first look from OnePlus from the guys over at Android Authority. This image belongs to the Android 11 Developer Preview Source Code and it allegedly belongs to the 8T. Now, we should take these with a grain of salt as it could be a simple place holder, but it kinda looks different enough from the 8 Pro. It shows a pretty similar design but with a different color scheme, at least when it comes to the wallpaper shown and it makes sense as this is a T model. We’re expecting this phone to pack a Snapdragon 865 Plus and other spec bumps. Since we got the 8 line in April, we should be getting these in early to mid Fall, so we’re getting close.

          Story of the day:

12-inch MacBook to make a return with ARM processors

Apple’s upcoming 10.8-inch iPad appears in leaked schematics with an iPad Pro-like design

Next Apple event would present AirTags, Apple Watch Series 6, and iPhone 12 with LiDAR sensor?

Let’s talk about Apple’s convoluted roadmap as, we have a bunch of leaks from different sources so bear with me here. Let’s start off with Apple Silicon Macs as those are coming later when compared to Cupertino’s Fall Line. According to a new supply chain report from China, the 12-inch MacBook is making a comeback as an ARM-powered machine. The report mentions that we should expect it by the end of this year with Apple’s A14X chip built on TSMC’s 5nm process. This MacBook will apparently weigh less than 1KG and it will be able to reach 15-20hrs of battery life. Moving on to next year, another report claims that we should expect an Apple Silicon iMac in the second half of 2021 with a custom GPU codenamed “Lifuka”. This iMac will apparently offer better performance and more energy efficiency than Intel models. But, now let’s move on to the announcements that should happen in a couple of weeks. We have some leaked schematics of the 10.8-inch iPad from 91Mobiles and it looks like it will adopt the iPad Pro’s design. They bring the squared design, Face ID and a USB-C port. This iPad would be the successor to the current 10.2in iPad which costs $329 and could launch along with the iPhones. Finally, according to a new MacOtakara report, Apple will be hosting an event in the latter half of October to announce the iPhone 12, the Apple Watch Series 6 and the AirTags. These leaks contradict the previous information we got from Jon Prosser where we’d get the Watch and iPads through a silent release in September and then the iPhones in October.

12-inch MacBook to make a return with ARM processors

The 12-inch MacBook with Intel processors was discontinued just more than a year ago, but it seems that it was all part of Apple’s strategy to make way for its new ARM-powered MacBooks. Earlier this year, Apple announced that it was going to stop using Intel processors in its Macs to give way to a new wave ARM-powered products. This transition will take Apple around two years, but it seems that the first model to embrace the change will be the 12-inch MacBook by the end of this year.

“Industry sources pointed out that the first A14X processor designed by Apple has been finalized and will begin mass production using TSMC’s 5nm process before the end of the year.
“Apple’s supply chain industry pointed out that by the end of this year, Apple is expected to launch a Macbook with a 12-inch Retina Display, using a self-developed and designed A14X processor. The processor is codenamed Tonga and supports a USB Type-C interface. It will weigh less than 1 kilogram.
“Because of the low power consumption of the Arm architecture processor, the battery life of the new Macbook can reach 15 to 20 hours.”

The new 12-inch MacBook is also expected to deliver up to 20 hours of battery life, and changes don’t stop there. Apple may also be working in developing its own GPUs, and these could even arrive in the second half of 2021, inside an iMac.

“In the past, Apple introduced Mac personal computers with Intel CPUs, equipped with Huida or AMD GPUs, but industry insiders pointed out that Apple has cancelled support for AMD GPUs in the macOS Arm 64-bit operating system, indicating that Apple will be adopted in the future. Silicon’s Mac personal computers may use a GPU developed and designed by Apple. Recently, the industry has reported that in addition to Apple Silicon processors, Apple’s iMac desktops launched next year will also be equipped with self-developed and designed Apple GPUs.

“According to relevant sources, Apple’s self-developed GPU is progressing smoothly. The research and development code is Lifuka. Like the upcoming A14X processor, it is produced using TSMC’s 5nm process. Apple has designed a series of processors for Mac personal computers. The new GPU will provide better performance per watt and higher computing performance. It has tile-based deferred rendering technology that allows application developers to write More powerful professional application software and game software.”

However, these possible changes have also affected other companies, as Apple could’ve asked TSMC to stop making chips for Huawei, as Cupertino wants to make sure the chipmaker has enough capacity to supply its needs. Of course, the US ban on Huawei makes this an easy decision for TSMC, leaving MediaTek as the only possible supplier for Huawei Silicon in the near future. These last details suggest that the report’s source may be TSMC employees or consultants, which would make this report from China Times more reliable.

Best External Hard Drives for your Mac in 2020

At times we are short on inbuilt storage and have to rely on some kind of external backup solution. And the best external hard drives offer an effective way to counter that. They bring a backup solution that can be used for carrying your files wherever you go. External hard drives are an excellent way to protect, secure and save all your files and folder.

USB flash drives and microSD memory cards are not always enough to get the work done. They are comparatively low on read and write speeds and carrying large files could be an issue on these. That’s where external hard drives come into play. Portable hard disks are one of the best ways to store and secure large files that require a lot of storage space and faster read/write speeds.

Further, portable SSDs take the external hard drives up a notch and offer a more durable and a lot faster solution. There are secured drives as well, which are specifically designed to keep your files extremely secure. But these could be costly.

Apple’s MacBook shipments may grow in this third quarter

Maybe 2020 hasn’t been so great in sales for several companies because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but some companies have seen their sales numbers increase. Now, according to the latest report from DigiTimes, Apple may see it’s MacBook shipments grow in this third quarter.

“The upstream supply chain originally believed demand from the work-from-home group would only be short-term, but is now expecting the momentum to last much longer than anticipated, the sources said.”

It seems that Apple’s MacBook shipments may increase in this third quarter of 2020, as the back-to-school season begins, and the fact that more professionals are currently working from home. Apple has shipped between 3.2 and 3.5 million MacBook s in the second quarter of 2020, and this number is expected to be increased by over 20 percent. However, let’s remember that we are expecting Apple to launch its new Apple Silicon powered MacBooks by the end of the year, to begin its two-year-long transition away from Intel processors.

Apple silicon MacBook Pros will be redesigned: Report

Popular analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had predicted Apple’s move to ARM Mac before the company announced its plans and the two-year transition timeline at the WWDC 2020. Now, he has some new predictions under his belt. The information comes from 9toMac. The publication says that Kuo expects the 13.3-inch Pro to start shipping in the fourth quarter.

Plus, he expects the Apple Silicon-based MacBook Air to go into production around the same time, for a late winter or early spring launch in 2021. The analyst further adds that Apple will launch a redesigned MacBook Pro series in 14-inch and 16-inch screen sizes. Moreover, the entry price of future MacBook Air could be lower than the current one thanks to the cost reductions associated with switching from Intel to Apple CPUs.

As for the MacBook Pro, Kuo’s report indicates that the redesign is in the pipeline. However, we’ll have to wait at least until the middle of next year. The 16-inch MacBook Pro will also see an update to its industrial design. The analyst claims, Apple will release another 13.3-inch hardware refresh before the 16-inch variant. The former will keep the same industrial design but be powered by Apple Silicon.

We’ve been getting a lot of leaks for HTC’s upcoming device and now we have some hands-on pictures from Mr. Evan Blass. These pictures match the previous schematics we had as well as the teaser the company posted earlier this week. It shows an interesting color variant, kind of like the ones on the HTC U12 but this one is a tone of gray instead of blue. We see the triple camera array at the back as well as the physical fingerprint scanner. The leaked specs for this phone include the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660, 6GB of RAM and this will be HTC’s first phone running Android 10 out of the box.

It seems that a new Samsung Galaxy S20 Lite is on the way

Back at CES, Samsung revealed their new Lite variants for the Note 10 and the S10. According to a new SamMobile report, the S20 will be getting the same treatment. The Galaxy S20 Lite is apparently under development with the model numbers SM-G780 and SM-G781 for the US and Global variants. The global variant will apparently lack 5G capabilities but the US variant will support 5G. It’s also expected to bring at least 128GB of storage and it will run Android 10 with One UI 2.5.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 will come with a flat screen

We have a new tweet from Ice Universe that shows off some cases for the Galaxy Note 20. Both of these are for the regular Note 20 and not for the Note 20 Plus and they show off that flat display that we’re expecting which was confirmed by Ice Universe a couple of days ago. In the Weibo post, he also claims that the Note 20 will enter mass production very soon.

Apple may give us a 12-inch MacBook with an Arm-based processor

Apple will reportedly announce at WWDC that they will be moving on from Intel chips to ARM-based Macs. We have a new leak from Twitter which we should take with a grain of salt, but it actually makes sense. On the Reddit post, Fudge said that based on tidbits from supply chain sources and reports, Apple might bring back the 12-inch MacBook to be the first model with these ARM chips. He details the road Apple has gone through to, to get to these ARM processors, starting back in 2014 by adding the T1 and T2 security chips. This launch with the new MacBook would start a new phase in this project which is basically Project Catalyst which allows Mac apps to work on the iPad. According to the post they are still working on perfecting the Infamous Butterfly Keyboard for it to be on this new model. It would bring the same design from the MacBook and the processor would be of 8-12 cores. Apple is reportedly making three tiers of A14X chips and we expect this rumored Mac to bring the lower tier. The Reddit post is actually a great read (we’ll link it down below) and it goes along with my speculation yesterday on Apple bringing this MacBook back to get started with the ARM processors.

BOE is allegedly having quality issues with iPhone 12 OLED displays

Yesterday we covered how BOE had failed Samsung’s first round of testing for Galaxy S21 display. Now, a new report from this morning claims that they failed Apple’s as well. This report mentions that they will be submitting new batches to both companies and it is not clear whether these are an initial test run or the actual stock that was planned to be on the iPhone 12. Cupertino is expecting 45M panels from BOE and it’s not clear if it will be affected from the pandemic, besides the quality issues. Due to that we don’t know if Apple will remain with BOE after the new batch they submit but if not, they might go to Samsung or LG which was moved to their third supplier for these BOE displays. Apple may give us a 12-inch MacBook with an Arm-based processor

It seems that Apple may go back to making 12-inch MacBook laptops. However, these new devices would arrive with Apple’s new Arm-based processors. Now, @choco_bit has shared his ideas on twitter on these new laptops.

Rumors suggest that Apple will soon stop using Intel processors in its future Macs and that these will be replaced by new Arm-based chips. Some are already expecting these changes to be announced on the next WWDC. Leaker @choco_bit believes that Apple will revive its 12-inch MacBook to introduce these new Arm-based chips. He also mentions that it may even arrive with a butterfly keyboard.

“There are rumors that Apple is still working internally to perfect the infamous Butterfly keyboard, and there are also signs that Apple is developing an A14x based processors with 8-12 cores designed specifically for use as the primary processor in a Mac. It makes sense that this model could see the return of the Butterfly keyboard, considering how thin and light it is intended to be, and using an A14x processor would make it will be a very capable, very portable machine, and should give customers a good taste of what is to come.”

He also mentions some of the advantages that these new processors may have over the ones from Intel. First of all, it would allow Apple to cut ties with Intel. They would also feature faster performance, reduced power consumption, and significant gains in graphics performance and apps using AI. But he also mentions the difficulties that Apple may have to endure when it transitions to these new Arm-based chips.

“- Developer will need to build both x86_64 and ARM version of their app – App Bundles have supported multiple-architecture binaries since the dawn of OS X and the PowerPC transition

          – Move to apps being distributed in an architecture-independent manner, as they are on the App Store. There is some software changes that are suggestive of this, such as the new architecture in dyld3.

          – An x86_64 instruction decoder in silicon – very unlikely due to the significant overhead this would create in the silicon design, and potential licensing issues. (ARM, being a RISC, “reduced instruction set”, has very few instructions; x86_64 has thousands)

          – Server-side ahead-of-time transpilation (converting x86 code to equivalent ARM code) using Notarization submissions – Apple certainly has the compiler chops in the LLVM team to do something like this

          – Outright emulation, similar to the approach that was taken in ARM releases of Windows, but received extremely poorly (limited to 32-bit apps, and very very slow)There could be other solutions in the works to fix this but I am not aware of any. This is just me speculating about some of the possibilities.”

The new Chromecast could arrive with a new name and Android TV

A new report claims that the Chromecast might be going through some changes soon. Apparently it will now be called Nest Cast and it will run full blown Android TV. Instead of having the content cast directly from your phone or other device, users would be able to use a remote to interact with the interface, just like TVs with Android TV. It will also be able to stream games through Stadia, sources aren’t certain when we are getting this but we might see it at Google I/O. Oh and other reports say that Android TV is gonna now become Google TV as well. Stay tuned.

Apple could give us a foldable MacBook or MacBook Pro in the future

Apple has put out several foldable patents over the years for both the iPad and the iPhone and now we have a new one for the Mac. The ‘Planar Hing Assembly’ patent shows a design for a MacBook Pro-style device which would have a ‘single piece body with a seamless appearance that includes a bendable portion, capable of having a smoothly curved shape’. The biggest problem is that in this bendable portion you still have mechanical components that have to be in communication with the rest of the device, doing things like connecting the keyboard to the display. Apple would fix the problem of having this bendable piece work by stacking layers that can transition from an uncompressed to a compressed state. This bendable hinge could be even more reliable than current hinges if done right, but we’ll see if we ever get it.

Microsoft Surface Go 2 with slimmer bezels, more power goes official for $399

Microsoft just announced a substantial list of products today, starting with the Surface Go 2 and the Surface Book 3. Starting off with the Surface Go 2, it features options from a Pentium Gold to a Intel Core m3 with slimmer bezels in the same chassis as the older model. Specs go from 4 to 8 Gigs of RAM, 64 Gigs of eMMC or 128 Gigs of SSD storage and price starts at $399, going up to $879 for the maxed out variant. Now, the Surface Book 3 brings a similar design as well but with way better internals. It brings Intel’s latest 10th gen processors, it goes up to 32GB of RAM with what Microsoft claims to be the fastest ever SSDs. You get to choose the graphics between the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Max Q, GTX 1660Ti or Quadro RTX 3000 on the business model. It comes in two sizes, 13.5in and 15in with a promised 15% boost in performance. The 13.5in starts at a hefty $1599 while the 15in will cost you $2299. They also announced the Surface Headphones 2 which now offer a darker color option along with the ANC it’s known for, letting you manually adjust the level of Noise Cancellation you want through 13 different levels. The interesting thing is that they now cost $249 instead of $349. Oh and the Surface Earbuds that look like gages.. Yeah those are finally available and ugly as ever.

These could be the new Samsung Galaxy S21 camera specs

We have a new report from Taiwan that hints to Samsung testing some interesting camera specs for the Galaxy S21. The report claims due to the Galaxy S20 being notorious for its focusing issues, that’s gonna be a major priority. It also says that one of the development models is rumored to bring a 150MP main sensor, a 64MP telephoto, a 16MP wide angle and a 12MP macro sensor. The report even mentiosn that the company might drop the ToF, which is quite interesting at a time when there’s so much bet for AR. Apparently two versions of this model are being tested, one with Optical Image Stabilization on the main sensor, the telephoto and the selfie camera. The other one has OIS for the main sensor, the telephoto and the wide angle. Samsung is also reportedly working on ramping up their work on higher resolution sensors to make room for the 150MP sensor.

Apple could give us a foldable MacBook or MacBook Pro in the future

We keep on getting images and patents that suggest that Apple is continually working to give us a new MacBook or MacBook Pro with a foldable design in the future. This time we see that the company is trying to replace the current hinge mechanism that connects the screen to the body of the computer and giving us a “planar hinge assembly that could apply to a MacBook Pro device.”

Apple’s US Patent No 10,642,318, describes “A personal computing device comprises a single piece body having a seamless overall appearance and that includes a bendable portion that is capable of having a smoothly curved shape. The single-piece body includes a first part capable of carrying a display suitable for presenting visual content, and a second part that is capable of carrying an input device suitable for accepting an input action.”

These new hinges are referred to as a new multi-state bending assembly, and it also mentions that it could be applied to a smartphone cover or a tablet computer device. The main idea is to create a single piece body with a bendable portion that would still have to house the same electronics that connect the screen to a keyboard. This “adjustable bending structure” would be formed by a stack of layers that can transition from an uncompressed state to a compressed state. We would only have to wait and see if this is simpler and more reliable than the current hinge in the MacBook Pro.
